Warriors tame Bobcats

HATTIESBURG – Bogue Chitto boys basketball coach Theodore “Bo”Black used several different strategies Thursday night, in theiropening game of the 2000 Hattiesburg Holiday Classic. Nothing Blacktried seemed to work as the Oak Grove Warriors blasted the Bobcats62-39.

Bogue Chitto plays Prentiss or Tylertown today at 1:00 p.m., inthe second day of the 3-day affair.

The Bobcats (4-8) are in a rebuilding mode this season.Black returns to the sidelines after a short hiatus. He wanted togive his ballclub a different look this season, and they areexperiencing some growing pains.

“We will use this tournament as a learning experience,”said Black. “We are young but we should be ready come tournamenttime.”

Black was referring to the post-season Division 7-1Atournament, which is scheduled to be held at Dexter.

Oak Grove (10-5), coached by David Bush, saw his teamtake advantage of numerous Bobcat turnovers take an early 8-1lead.

After a Bogue Chitto timeout, Doran Dunn came off thebench to sack 3 treys in the period to cut Oak Grove’s lead to18-12 lead, entering the second period.

Dunn paced the Bobcats with 11 points.

The Warriors opened the quarter with a 13-1 run to takea 31-13 lead with 3:38 left in the first half. Bush’s team realizeda 34-20 lead at the intermission.

Oak Grove, who competes in Class 4A this season, keptapplying the defensive pressure. The Warriors held a 20-point lead,47-27 entering the fourth period.

Both teams emptied their benches as the Lamar Countyopposition carved out the 23-point margin of victory.

Oak Grove was led by M. J. Mayfield with 20points.
