Lawrence boys, girls lead tourney

MONTICELLO – Tim Horton fired in a game-high 23 points to leadthe Lawrence County Cougars to a 61-46 win over the Franklin CountyBulldogs Thursday night in the opening round of the Lawrence CountyRound-Robin Tournament.

In the girls game, Jackie Oatis fired in 12 points to spark theLady Cougars to a 48-33 victory over the Lady Dawgs.

In the other tournament games last night, the Prentiss boysslipped past Mendenhall 48-47 and the Prentiss girls knocked offMendenhall 64-59.

Today’s games feature Franklin County meeting Mendenhall at 4p.m. for the girls and 5:30 for the boys. At 7, the Lawrence girlsmeet Prentiss followed by the Lawrence boys vs. Prentiss at8:30.

Lawrence Co. 61, Franklin Co. 46

Adding support to the Lawrence win with 19 points was NicMikell.

Franklin (7-7) led Lawrence (15-2) 15-13 at the end of the firstquarter. The Cougars came back with a 17-13 run to go ahead 30-28over the Dawgs at the half. A 13-5 scoring run in the third quartergave Lawrence a comfortable 43-33 advantage going into the finalframe.

“We played pretty well in the first half,” said Franklin headboys coach Chris Jordan. “We started to come apart in the secondhalf.”

Logan Jones paced Franklin with 15 points, eight rebounds, twoassists and two steals. Netting 12 points was Demtrice Weathersby.Grant Rogers collected seven rebounds and three assists.

Lawrence Co. 48, Franklin Co. 33

The Lawrence girls jumped out to a 15-9 lead over Franklin(4-12) in the first quarter. At halftime, the Lady Cougarsdominated the Lady Dawgs with a 27-12 edge.

“We played pretty well in the first half,” said Franklin girlshead coach Albert Cain. “Our offense and defense pretty much shutdown in the second half.”

Franklin got 15 points, four assists and four steals fromCarletta Brown. Dedire Gant pulled down 15 rebounds.

Following Oatis with 12 rebounds and three steals was StephanieDexter.

Mendenhall 48, Prentiss 47

In the boys game,15-5 Mendenhall got 16 points from James Hobbs.Don Lockhart netted 11 points, pulled down 10 rebounds and blockedfour shots.

Prentiss (10-9) got a game-high 19 points from freshman AlJefferson. Jefferson also collected eight rebounds. made threesteals, had two assists and blocked two shots.

Prentiss 64, Mendenhall 59

The 5-10 Prentiss girls were lead to the win on Satae Bridges 13points, 10 rebounds and five steals. Samaerrah Rankins finishedwith 10 points.

Mendenhall (5-13) got 16 points apiece from Ilshia Newsome andRuby Williams. Scoring 13 points was Kelisha Holloway. Williamsalso collected 10 rebounds, four steals and three assists. Hollowayfollowed with seven steals, five assists and three steals.
