BA teams trounce Parklane

Senior forward Turner Havard pumped in 18 points to power thehost Brookhaven Academy Cougars in a 52-44 win over the McCombParklane Academy Pioneers Friday night.

The win improved Brookhaven Academy’s record to 17-4 on theseason. Parklane fell to 9-10 with the loss.

In the girls game, senior guard Amy Smith’s 11 points sparkedthe Lady Cougars to a 55-24 victory over the Lady Pioneers.

The Brookhaven Academy girls improved to 25-1 and the Parklanegirls fell to 13-9.

Brookhaven 52, Parklane 44

A pair of three pointers from Parklane’s Zac Pattie andJacob Brumfield helped the Pioneers take a 10-8 lead over theCougars at the end of the first quarter. Brookhaven came back inthe second quarter to go up 24-22 on a three-pointer from LayneMoreton with 1:10 left. At the half, Brookhaven led Parklane28-25.

A 16-11 scoring run in the third quarter gave theCougars a 44-36 lead over the Pioneers going into the final frame.Both teams scored eight points in the fourth quarter as Brookhavensecured the win.

“Jake Sessums did a good job defending Brumfield,” saidBrookhaven Academy boys coach Dale Watts after the win. Brumfieldwas the leading scorer for his team but was held to nine pointsFriday night by Sessums.

“I was real pleased,” continued Watts. “The guys didn’tget down. We’ve been working on putting pressure on defense withoutscoring a basket and maintaining control.”

Following Havard in scoring for the Cougars was Sessumswith 13 points, going 5 of 6 from the free throw line in the finalminutes of the game. Paul Coker collected 12 points and led off thebackboards with 13 rebounds. Making seven assists and four stealswas Ben Davis.

“Brookhaven Academy has a good ball club,” saidfirst-year Parklane boys coach E.W. Foy. “I’m proud of our kids.We’re playing better ball.”

The Pioneers got 14 points from Lance Newlon and 13 fromPattie.

Brookhaven Academy 55, Parklane 24

The Parklane girls made a game of it in the firstquarter to overcome a 14-4 deficit in the final two minutes and cutthe deficit to 16-9.

Second-quarter action saw the Lady Cougars explode for a16-2 run to go into the half with a 38-13 advantage over the LadyPioneers.

Brookhaven Academy girls coach Barry Gray playedreserves most of the second half and they outscored Parklane 21-11to preserve the win.

“Everybody got a lot of playing time,” said Gray.”Parklane has a good team when they are healthy.” According toCoach Gray, the Lady Pioneers had several starters who wereill.

Senior guard Katie Newman assisted the Lady Cougars,collecting nine points, five steals and four assists. LindsayAltman and Anna L. Gatlin pulled down five rebounds apiece. Anna L.Gatlin had five rebounds.

Hillary Branch had nine points for the LadyPioneers.

“We played as good as we possibly could,” statedParklane girls coach Kim Wesse. “My girls gave a goodeffort.”

Junior High Results

Powering the 13-1 junior high Cougars to the 53-39 winover the Pioneers with 16 points was Jonathan Winborne. JonathanStrong netted 11 points.

The Brookhaven Academy girls dumped Parklane 43-31.Jessie Altman led the 16-0 Lady Cougars with nine points. Nettingeight points apiece were Mallory Logan and AbbyWilliams.
