Bogue Chitto girls prevail; Purvis tops Lady Panthers

BOGUE CHITTO – R.L. “Bob” Calhoun Gymnasium was the scene ofSaturday’s 8th Annual Fellowship of Christian Athletes HardwoodClassic. Included were teams from Brookhaven, Tylertown, Purvis,McComb, Enterprise, North Pike and host Bogue Chittoparticipating.

In the opening game, the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats overcame a30-18 halftime deficit to defeat the Tylertown Lady Chiefs 53-45.Purvis edged the Brookhaven girls 43-37 in the second game.

Jessica Melton led Bogue Chitto (13-3) with 16 points,nine steals, five assists and six rebounds.

“We missed so many easy layups in the first half,” saidLady Bobcat head coach Mickey Myers. “The one thing we did was notlose our composure. Every time we made a run at Tylertown, theyanswered the challenge. We played with a lot of intensity in thesecond half.”

Myers said that Tylertown center Tearrah Andrews washard to stop in the first half.

“She scored 22 first-half points and we couldn’t stopher one-on-one,” said Myers. “We changed to a 1-3-1 defense late inthe third quarter and our offense finally clicked after that. Itwas a very big win for our girls.”

Randi Moak scored 11 points and had five assists whileYolanda Drummond and Kristen Hatten each scored eight points forBogue Chitto.

Andrews finished with 24 points for the Lady Chiefs, butonly scored two points in the final half. She also grabbed 17rebounds.

Purvis 43, Brookhaven 37

The 13th-ranked Purvis Lady ‘Naders used a stiflingdefense to smother Brookhaven.

Shanda Parker led Purvis (20-2) with 16 points and 10rebounds in the win. Ykeisha Gray and Amber Dunaway added 12 and 10points for the Lady ‘Naders.

Nikki Blakely led the Lady Panthers (11-8) with 16points.

“We didn’t play well today,” said lady Panther coachRonald Gill. “Purvis played tough defense,and we just couldn’t getour shots to drop.”
