The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars tuned up for the District4-AA Tournament with a pair of weekend victories. In Saturday’sgirls game, Brookhaven Academy got 14 points from senior guard AmySmith as the host Lady Cougars took an easy 60-26 win overHillcrest Christian on Senior Night. Smith also made four stealsand had four assists.

Friday night at Gallman, seniors Lindsay Altman and LindseyPhillips pumped in 12 points apiece to lead the Lady Cougars to a40-30 decision over the host Copiah Academy Lady Colonels.

The No. 1 seeded Lady Cougars (32-1) enter the District 4-AATournament Friday night at Wilkinson County Christian Academy inWoodville. Brookhaven meets the winners of the Oak Forest-ColumbiaAcademy game at 4 p.m. The tourney gets underway Wednesday andcontinues through Saturday night with the championship games.

Brookhaven Academy’s boys whipped Copiah 67-43 Friday night butfell 50-40 to Hillcrest on Saturday night as Seth Smith pumped in20 points for the winners.

No. 1 seed Brookhaven (24-6) plays again Friday at 5:15 in thesemifinals of the District 4-AA Tournament at Wilkinson CountyChristian Academy in Woodville. They’ll play the winner of theWilkinson-Oak Forest boys game.

Brookhaven 60, Hillcrest 26

“We shot the ball well over their zone,” said Brookhaven Academygirls coach Barry Gray. “Hillcrest used a 1-3-1 zone on defense. Weplayed extremely well.”

Adding support to the Lady Cougars’ win with 13 points and fiverebounds was Altman. Katie Newman netted 11 points and had fiveassists. Pulling down five rebounds apiece were Phillips and A.L.Gatlin.

Amy McDonald led Hillcrest with seven points.

Brookhaven 40, Copiah 30

In Friday’s win, Phillips was tops off the backboards forBrookhaven with eight rebounds. Anna L. Gatlin added supportpulling down six rebounds. Smith made nine steals and had fourassists.

“Copiah did a good job,” said Gray. “They (Lady Colonels) tookaway our strength.”

The Copiah girls are 23-9 on the season. Coach Mitch Mitchell’sLady Colonels were led by Ashley Garner’s 11 points.

Brookhaven 67, Copiah 43

Directing the Cougar victory over Copiah was Turner Havard with23 points, Jake Sessums chipped in 15 points and Paul Coker 14.

“It was a good win for us on the road,” said Brookhaven Academycoach Dale Watts. “We had a lot ball movement which resulted in alot of easy baskets.”

The Colonels (9-17) got 19 points from Tyler Berch. They trailed28-16 at halftime.

Hillcrest 50, Brookhaven 40

Coker scored 14 points and Havard 13 in the loss. On thebackboards, they both had 9 rebounds. Jake Sessums chipped in 6assists and Ben Davis scored 11 points.

“We had the game in the palm of our hand,” said Coach Watts. “Wewon 24 minutes and they won eight. Their eight minutes were themost important of the game.”

Watts saw his team overcome a 29-23 halftime deficit.
