Brookhaven Academy sweeps district titles

WOODVILLE – The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars captured theirfourth straight Mississippi Private School Association District4-AA championship Saturday night with a 65-29 win over the BowlingGreen girls. Brookhaven Academy, 34-1, is the two-time defendingState AA champ.
In the boys championship game, Brookhaven Academy whippedColumbia Academy 86-44. The Cougars, coached by Dale Watts,improved to 28-5 with the title.
Brookhaven Academy will host the South State AA Tournamentbeginning Tuesday. The state tournament is at Grenada Kirk.
Brookhaven Academy 65, Bowling Green 29
“It was a good defensive game,” said Brookhaven Academygirls coach Barry Gray. “It was a good team win. We are lookingforward to South State.”
The Brookhaven girls jumped on Bowling Green 23-6 in thefirst quarter and pushed their lead to 39-16 athalftime.
Powering the Lady Cougars with 14 points and sevenrebounds was senior center Lindsay Altman. Seniors Katie Newman andLindsey Phillips fired in 10 points apiece. Pulling down sevenrebounds was Ancy Myers followed by Anna L. Gatlin with sixrebounds.
Newman also collected four rebounds and Phillips hadfour assists. Anna K. Gatlin followed with four rebounds and fiveassists.
Jessie Dillon netted 18 points for BowlingGreen.
Brookhaven 86, Columbia 44
In the boys championship game, Brookhaven pounced onColumbia for an 18-5 first-quarter advantage. At the half,Brookhaven had pounded out a 41-15 lead over Columbia.
Pumping in 26 points and pulling down 10 rebounds forBrookhaven was junior center Paul Coker. Ben Davis netted 20 pointsand had seven assists. Collecting 12 points and six rebounds wasTurner Havard. Jake Sessums led with 11 assists. Chad Lagronegrabbed six rebounds.
Colby Caster had 13 points for Columbia.
Brookhaven 58, Oak Forest 30
In the semifinals, the Lady Cougars (33-1) got 12 pointsand 12 rebounds from Lindsey Phillips as they roared to a 39-18halftime lead. Lindsay Altman and Katie Newman each had 8 rebounds.Newman also had 9 assists and 4 steals. Smith had 3steals.
Brookhaven 68, Wilkinson 43
The Cougars (27-5) were led by center Turner Havard with17 points in Friday’s semifinals. Guard Craig Smith sacked 5 treysand finished with 15 points. Coker grabbed 9 rebounds. LayneMoreton made 4 steals.
The Rams got 18 points from Adam Coronett and 17 fromBrandon Cavin. They trailed Brookhaven 28-17 athalftime.
