Perkins commits to Tulane

Brookhaven High School quarterback Fred Perkins endedspeculation Monday morning when he made a verbal commitment to signa football scholarship with Tulane. Perkins made the announcementat a 10 a.m. press conference held in the BHS field house.

Perkins, a 6-foot-3, 225-pound standout, rushed for 870 yardsand 17 touchdowns as a senior option quarterback, leading thePanthers to a 7-3 record and a berth in the Class 4A stateplayoffs. He also returned a kickoff for a touchdown and threw oneTD pass.

It was the first year for Perkins to play quarterback afterplaying tight end and wide receiver his sophomore and junior years.He runs a 4.4 in the 40-yard dash. He has been selected to play inthis summer’s Mississippi/Alabama All-Star Classic in Mobile,Ala.

Perkins, named The Daily Leader’s Player of the Year on the2000 All-Lincoln County Football Team, made campus visits toSouthern Miss, LSU, Mississippi State and Tulane. MSU head coachJackie Sherrill flew into Brookhaven two weeks ago for a recruitingvisit with Perkins.

A fleet-footed, hard-hitting outfielder in baseball, Perkinscould play both sports in college.
