Lady ‘Cats crush Scott Central 64-34

BOGUE CHITTO – They say defense wins ball games. That’s exactlywhat the Bogue Chitto Lady Bobcats provided in a 64-34 Monday nightpasting of defending 1A State Champion Scott Central in CalhounGymnasium.

Bogue Chitto (22-8) virtually put the game away in the firstquarter by outscoring the Lady Rebels 17-3.

“We just came out of the gates pretty fast,” said Bogue Chittohead coach Mickey Myers. “We knew that Scott Central wouldn’t goaway and we decided to take it to them early.”

The Lady Bobcats caused seven first quarter turnovers enroute tothe win.

“They (Scott Central) were pretty young at the guard positionsand we felt that’s where we could do the most damage,” saidMyers.

Bogue Chitto extended its lead to 31-11 behind the shooting ofsophomore Jerrica McGary. McGary scored eight of her 11 points inthe second quarter.

“We came out flat and Bogue Chitto took advantage of it,” saidScott Central coach Chad Harrison. “When we fell behind it was justan uphill battle after that.”

Scott Central (24-11) battled back at the end of the secondquarter behind the inside shooting of Katie Nickerson. Nickersonscored 15 of her game-high 20 points to cut the Bogue Chitto leadto 31-20 at halftime.

“I gave Yolanda (Drummond) a little break during that time andthey started to go inside to Nickerson,” said Myers. “When we putYolanda back in she held Nickerson to only five points the rest ofthe way. I thought Yolanda played her best game of the year,” addedMyers. Drummond finished with 18 points, 11 rebounds, 3 steals andhanded out 2 assists.

Scott Central was able to cut the lead to nine on two occasionsin the third quarter, but the Lady Bobcats displayed their earlyfirst quarter pressure and outscored the Lady Rebels 31-10 down thestretch.

“When you put 32 minutes of constant pressure on a team, thateventually wears them down both emotionally as well as physically,”said Myers.”

That constant pressure caused 27 Scott Central turnovers.

Jessica Melton provided another well-rounded game with 17points, 6 rebounds, 6 steals and 6 assists. Senior Kristen Hattenhad 7 rebounds. McGary and Randi Moak each had 6 rebounds.

The Lady Bobcats will now host the 1A Mississippi South StatePlayoffs with semifinal games on Friday night and the consolationand championship games set for Saturday night. Lake (30-3) willopen action against the winner of today’s Durant-Mount Olive gameat 6:30 p.m. Bogue Chitto will play the winner of today’s PineyWoods-McAdams tilt at 8 p.m. Saturday’s consolation andchampionship games will be at 6:30 and 8 p.m.
