Services for James Bates of Bogue Chitto are 3 p.m., Friday,Feb. 23, at Faith M. B. Church with burial in the churchcemetery.

Visitation is Thursday from noon until 5 p.m. with family hourfrom 6-7 p.m. at Williams Mortuary.

Mr. Bates, 78, died Feb. 16, 2001 at Countrybrook Living Center.He was born in Lincoln County on Dec. 12, 1922, to the Rev. CharlieBates and Golder Brown Bates. He was a graduate of Lincoln CountyTraining School.

He was retired. He was a member of Faith M. B. Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents; his son, Rufus Bates;and his daughter, Mary Louise Fairman.

Survivors are his wife, Louella Bates of Bogue Chitto; his sons,James Charles Bates of Quincy, Fla., James Fairman, Tyrone Fairman,Corey Brown, Londre Brown, Lavon Brown, Vance Brown, and Pee WeeBrown, all of Chicago, and Billy Joe Fairman of Jackson; hisdaughters, Charlene Long and Shirley Baker, both of Quincy, Fla.,and Dorothy Fairman, Rose Fairman, and Novella Brown, all ofChicago; his stepsons, Armond Mikell of Summit, Ross Reed ofAnniston, Ala., and Albert Reed and David Reed, both of Brookhaven;his stepdaughters, Margaret Carey of Chicago, and Myra Reed andLisa Chatman, both of Brookhaven; his sisters, Grace Blackwell andGladys Calhoun, both of Bogue Chitto, Daisy Fairman of Jackson, andJo Ann Robinson of Brookhaven; his brothers, Leroy Bates ofBrookhaven and Jonas Bates of Picayune; and many grandchildren,great-grandchildren, and other relatives.

Services for Joan R. Idom of Brookhaven are 3 p.m., Wednesday,Feb. 21, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial in RiverwoodMemorial Park.

Mrs. Idom, 66, died Feb. 20, 2001, at King’s Daughters MedicalCenter. She was born in Lincoln County on Sept. 11, 1934, to JohnnyE. Richardson Sr. and Maybell Sullivan Richardson.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Brookway Church ofChrist.

Preceding her in death were her father; and her brother, DannyRichardson.

Survivors are her mother, Maybell Sullivan Richardson ofBrookhaven; her brother, John E. Richardson Jr. of Brookhaven; hersisters, Mary Ann Barker and Lucille Farris, both of Brookhaven;and a special friend, Layton Congdon.

Mattelle Stamps Runnels

Services for Mattelle Stamps Runnels of Bude are 11 a.m.,Friday, Feb. 23, at Bude Methodist Church with burial in MidwayCemetery.

Mrs. Runnels, 96, died Feb. 20, 2001, at Hospice Ministries inRidgeland. She was born in Brookhaven on Jan. 14, 1905, to J. P.Stamps and Mary Dunn Stamps.

She was a retired school lunch manager with 20 years service.She was a member of the Methodist faith.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Arthur A.Runnels; her son, Ronnie Runnels; her daughter, Leontine Runnels;and her great-granddaughter, Brandi Runnels.

Survivors are her daughters, Helen Rassner of Madison and JoyceWilliams of Westbury, N.Y.; her sister, Jewel Marr of Houston,Texas; and five grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Saxon, 85, died Feb. 20, 2001, at Meadville Nursing Home.She was born in Senatobia on Sept. 1, 1915, to Thomas William Tateand Melrose Randle Tate.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of Meadville BaptistChurch.

Preceding her in death were her parents; and her husband, V. L.Saxon.

Survivors are her son, Robert Lamar Saxon of Meadville; herdaughter, Linda Saxon Nix of Biloxi; her brother, Charles WilliamTate of Amory; her sister, Melrose Tate Streety of Amory; and sixgrandchildren.

Alvin W. “Smitty” Smith Jr.

Services for Alvin W. “Smitty” Smith Jr. of Shreveport, La.,were Monday, Feb. 19, at Westview Christian Church with burial inForest Park West.

Mr. Smith, 69, died Feb. 16, 2001, at Spring Lake Guest Care. Hewas a native of Brookhaven and had lived in Shreveport for 47years.

He was an electrician and member of IBEW local 194. He worked atShriners Hospital for eight years before retiring. He was a memberof Westview Christian Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, Eunice Lofton Smith andAlvin W. Smith Sr.

Survivors are his wife, Dorothy Anderson Smith; his daughters,Pamela Smith Cunningham of Fairfax, Va., and Sandra Smith Brumleyof Keithville, La.; his sisters, Mildred Thurman and Juanita Smith,both of Brookhaven; and four grandchildren, and a host of niecesand nephews.
