City Election update

All city aldermen races will be contested this year now that aformer board member has entered the Ward 5 contest, according toCity Clerk’s Office records.
John Richardson, who was Ward 5 alderman from 1993-97, signed upFriday as a Republican. If no other candidates sign up, he wouldface incumbent Tom Smith, who is the lone Democratic candidate, inthe June 5 general election.
In other action, Donald Dixon added his name to the list ofcandidates for Ward 1 aldermen. He is scheduled to face incumbentAlderman Dorsey Cameron and Roosevelt Collins, all of whom arerunning as Democrats.
With less than a week to go in the qualifying period that endsFriday at 5 p.m., 32 candidates have signed up to run for 11elected city offices. Of the candidates, 27 are Democrats, five areRepublicans and there are no independents.
Party primaries are scheduled for Tuesday, May 1, with runoffs,where needed, on Tuesday, May 15. Primary winners and independents,if there are any, will meet Tuesday, June 5, in the generalelection.
Candidates who have qualified so far (all Democrats unlesslisted) include:
* Mayor – Incumbent W.W. “Bill” Godbold, Alderman at large HenryNewman, the Rev. Jerry Durr, Roger Ruffin Osborne and RepublicanWard 4 Alderman John Roberts.
* City Clerk: Incumbent Iris Rudman.
* City Tax Collector: Incumbent Pat Duckworth.
* Chief of Police – Arlustra “Pap” Henderson and BatemanStilley.
* Alderman at large – Les L. Bumgarner, Mrs. Jerry L. Wilson andDonna Wilkerson.
* Ward 2 Alderman – Incumbent Terry Bates, Charlie Lee Smith,Rolanda Spiller, J.D. Watkins and Billy Simon
* Ward 3 Alderman – Incumbent the Rev. Jerry L. Wilson andClarence B. “Doc” Johnson.
* Ward 4 Alderman – Jerry Case and Republicans Boyce Bullock andGary S. Boutwell.
* Ward 6 Alderman – Incumbent John E. “Buddy” Allen, LeroyHewitt, Billy G. Carson, Nell Beeson and Republican KeithPeden.
