Ladd, Evans propel Cougars over Wesson

WESSON – The arm of Dusty Ladd and the bat of Nathan Evanspropelled the Lawrence County High Cougars to a 5-0 win over WessonThursday evening. Ladd, a junior lefty, fired a two-hitter andstruck out seven, and Evans, a senior left-fielder who came intothe game batting .470, was 3-4 with three doubles and threeRBIs.

In improving his record to 2-2, Ladd allowed just two singles toNick Gunter and Whitney Scoggin, and didn’t walk a batter. He wasso in command that he never went to a three-ball count.

“Dusty pitched very well,” said first year Lawrence County coachChris Clark. “He threw all of his pitches for strikes whenever hewanted to, and our guys played good defense behind him. It was agood win for our team.”

Clark said that his Cougars didn’t “tear the cover off the ball,but did put together enough hits to win the game.”

“Nathan (Evans) has been hot all season,” added Clark. “We stillneed some more people to heat up if we’re to make noise in ourdivision.”

Evans and Will Dawsey put together doubles in the top of thefirst to give Lawrence County a 1-0 lead. Evans then teamed withMichael Edwards on back-to-back doubles in the third to give theCougars a 2-0 lead. Evans’ two-run double highlighted a three runfourth inning outburst. T.J. Johnson added a sacrifice fly andAnthony Rogers got one of his two hits in that frame.

Wesson pitchers Joseph Langham and Ryan Williams both threw wellin defeat. They combined to record six strikeouts and allow sevenhits. Williams shut out the Cougars over the last threeinnings.

Lawrence County evened its record to 6-6. Wesson fell to3-8.
