Some citizens’ efforts have been “golden” as Keep Lincoln CountyBeautiful’s cleanup campaign entered its final week Monday.

KLCB and Lincoln County Chancery Clerk officials said four of 24″golden eggs” placed in litter throughout the county had been foundduring the first week of the “Gold in the Litter” campaign. Theproject is being held in conjunction with the Great AmericanCleanup April 1-14.

“Overall, it’s moving along,” said KLCB Chairman HomerRichardson about the campaign, adding that one group reportedpicking up 11 bags of litter during the last week.

In the campaign, KLCB members placed the golden eggs in roadsidelitter throughout the city and in the county’s five supervisordistricts. Egg finders could turn in the eggs to the chancery’sclerk office and win a prize donated by local businesses.

When he was trying to hide the eggs, Richardson said there somestretches as long as half a mile where there was no place to put aprize. He said that indicated that some people were cleaning upareas.

“That’s kind of nice,” he said. “That was a pleasing thing.”

Unfortunately, there were also areas that Richardson consideredso bad that no one would attempt to clean them up.

Richardson said he would have been pleased to have one or twoeggs turned in. With the eggs spread across the county, the numberfound suggested cleanup efforts were also spread out.

“That’s a lot of roads for people to be cleaning,” Richardsonsaid.

Trash bags for collecting litter are available from the countybarn on old Highway 51. Richardson encouraged those who plan toparticipate to contact him at 833-4126 with information on the areathey plan to clean up and how many are in the group.

Richardson was hopeful clean-up efforts would continue as thecommunity prepares for the upcoming Tour of Homes. He said gettinglots of people cleaning up small areas was the goal.

“If everyone takes a small area to clean up, it all adds up,”Richardson said.
