Havard signs pact with Co-Lin Wolves

Copiah-Lincoln Community men’s head basketball coach Dennis Simshas signed Brookhaven Academy senior Turner Havard to a scholarshipto play for the Wolves next season.

Havard (6-5, 180) played forward for Coach Dale Watts his senioryear. He averaged 16.1 points, 6.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 2.4steals per game during the season.

“I wanted to keep playing basketball,” said Havard who isundecided about his major. He says he plans to room with former BAstandout guard Chad Smith who will be a sophomore at Co-Lin andplays on the Wolves team.

Havard was selected to the Daily Leader’s 2000-2001 LincolnCounty Basketball First Team.

“Turner is tall and has the size,” said Sims. “He has thepotential. We’re going to put some strength and weight on him.He’ll probably play away from the goal.”

Havard and the Cougars finished the 2000-2001 season with a28-9 record. BA won the District 4-AA Tournament and was runner-upin South State. He also played in the North vs. South A-AA All-Stargame this season.

“The best thing about him (Havard) is that he is a ‘Yes sir,no sir’ kind of guy,” said Watts. “He is probably one of thehardest working players I have ever had.”

Havard appreciates all that Watts has done for him atBA.”I’m grateful he (Watts) helped me develop into the player Iam.”

Previously signed this spring by Coach Sims were CoreyBryant and Matt Fitzsimmons of Brookhaven and Nick Mikel, DairiusStarks and Tim Horton of Lawrence County.
