C-L splits with LSU-Eunice; close to reaching playoffs

WESSON – Even though Co-Lin split the Saturday afternoondoubleheader with LSU-Eunice, there was much at stake for theWolves at Sullivan Field. There were berths in the state andregional tournaments, along with several different scenarios thatcould take place.

The Wolfpack got the right set of circumstances to end theirregular season on a good note. First, LSU-Eunice defeated Co-Lin5-4 in the opener. The Wolves gained the split with a 6-3 win overthe Bengals in the finale.

The pairings for the state tournament will be decided followingthe Hinds-Southwest doubleheader scheduled for Monday.

A Southwest split or sweep puts Co-lin in as the No. 2 seed inthe South. Should Hinds sweep Southwest, the Eagles and Co-Lin willmeet Tuesday to determine the second spot. A flip of the coin willdetermine where the game will be played.

The Wolves will participate in Region 23 action in two weeks atItawamba against the host Indians in the opener.

LSU-Eunice 5, Co-Lin 4

Co-Lin (26-21) came out of the starting gate on fire inthe first game. Arlandus Brown singled, but was picked off tryingto steal second. Kyle Beall, Brandon Atkins and Britt Hedermandelivered consecutive singles to load the bases. Two batters later,Brett Duncan reached on a wild pitch to score Beall. Jason Milessingled, scoring Atkins and Hederman. The Wolfpack laid claimed toa 3-0, first-inning lead.

LSU-Eunice (24-19-1), coached by David Russo, gained a3-3 deadlock in the third. Cody Champagne, Adam Killgore and RobBreaux crossed home plate.

The Bengals would take the lead at 5-4 in the seventh.Nick Miller and Seth Thibodeaux singled and doubled, respectively.They would later score, as an error by the Wolves was a key in theinning for LSU-Eunice.

Tony Miller picked up the win in relief of starter BubbaBreaux for the Bengals. He threw 3 innings of 3-hit ball, allowing1 earned run with 1 strikeout and 1 base on balls. Breaux pitched 3innings, allowing 3 earned runs on 6 hits. He issued no walks andstruck out 2.

Jeff Sanders was credited with a save, tossing the finalinning; fanning 2 Co-Lin batters.

Doug Atkins suffered the loss for the Wolfpack, inrelief of starter Seth Lofton. Atkins pitched the final inning,allowing 2 earned runs on 3 hits. Lofton threw 6 innings, giving up3 runs (0 earned) on 8 hits; walking 1 and striking out4.

Brown paced Co-Lin with a 2-for-4 performance. Hesingled, doubled and scored a run. Atkins had 2 singles and a runscored.

Co-Lin 6, LSU-Eunice 3

The visitors from the Bayou State took charge in the topof the first. Nikki Miller and Garrett Sheehan scored and theBengals grabbed the early 2-0 lead on starting pitcher ChrisKennedy.

Co-Lin (27-21) produced their largest inning of the dayin the bottom of the fourth. Jason Miles singled. Brett Duncangrounded into a fielder’s choice, forcing Miles out at second. SethLofton singled. Ricky Caraway singled to load the bases. Duncanscored on a wild pitch. Matt Lea grounded out to the Bengalshortstop.

The fourth continued. Lofton would score on the throw tofirst. Caraway scored on a wild pitch. Brown singled and stolesecond. Kyle Beall walked and stole second. Atkins singled to scoreBrown. Beall stole home, as the Bengals tried a pick-offmove.

The Wolfpack added an insurance run in the sixth. Beallwalked, then stole second and third. Atkins walked. Beall wouldscore on an error by LSU-Eunice.

“It was good that these sophomores were able to win thelast game that they will ever play at Co-Lin,” said Wolfpack headcoach Keith Case following the game.

Kennedy (2-1), a sophomore from Brookhaven, threw 5.2innings of 6-hit ball to gain the victory. He allowed 3 runs (1earned), issuing 1 base-on-balls with no strikeouts.

Chuckie Stracener tossed 1-plus innings of relief with astrikeout. Josh Garrett got the save in the seventh, striking outthe final batter looking.

Mike Breaux suffered the loss for the Bengals in relief.He allowed 6 earned runs on 7 hits, with 2 walks and 1 strikeout.Starter Ben Minyard allowed no runs on 4 hits, with no walks and 1strikeout.

Brown went 2-for-4 with 2 singles and a run scored.Beall had a single, 2 runs scored and 2 stolen bases. Atkins had 2singles and a stolen base. Lofton and Carroway had 2singlesindividually.

LSU-Eunice dropped to 24-20-1.
