Brookhaven tracksters in state 4A meet today

Coach Randall Huffman carries a small but swift group ofhopefuls to the Class 4A State Track Meet at Jackson’s Hughes Fieldtoday. Field events begin a 3 p.m., followed by the track events at4:30.

Representing Brookhaven is senior Tarik Williams who is unbeatenin the 400 and 200-meter dashes this spring. His best time is 49.02in the 400 and 22 flat in the 200.

“I feel good about Tarik’s chances,” said Huffman. Williams, awide receiver/wingback in football, is considering a trackscholarship.

Also running for the Panthers is the 1600-meter relay team,composed of Williams, Thomas Barlow, Anthony Johnson and JefferyDow. They placed fourth in the South State 4A Meet with a time of3:25.

Crystal Springs roared to victory in the South State 4A boyscompetition, scoring 115 points. McComb was second with 86 pointsand East Central was third with 56. Brookhaven scored 25 points andfinished 10th.

The Lady Panthers are led by freshman Kenyata Coleman whofinished second in the South State 400-meter dash in 59seconds.

“All of our girls are young, except Devine (Porter) and she’s ajunior,” said Huffman. The Lady Panthers are entered in the 800 and1600-meter relays. They placed fourth in the 800 and second in the1600 at South State.

The 800 relay team includes Coleman, Katrina Daniels, T.C.Porter and Devine Porter. The 1600 team includes LaToya Kerr, thePorter sisters and Coleman. Serving as alternate is TanikaHathorn.

The George County girls, led by speedster Janice Fairley, arefavored to repeat at Class 4A champions. Fairley won the 100, 200and 400-meter races at South State as the Lady Rebels scored 94points, 15 ahead of runner-up Picayune’s 79 points. McComb wasthird with 69 points while West Jones scored 64, D’Iberville 39,Laurel 36 and Brookhaven 34.
