Co-Lin would like repeat of last year in Central playoffs

No doubt Co-Lin coach Keith Case would like a repeat of histeam’s performance in last year’s NJCAA Division II CentralDistrict/Super Regional Baseball Tournament. The Wolves reboundedfrom a second round loss and beat St. Louis Community College atForest Park twice to win the championship on Co-Lin’s SullivanField.

Co-Lin’s greatest season was climaxed with a fourth place finishin the NJCAA World Series at Millington, Tenn. The Wolves finished47-17.

Forest Park has the honor of hosting this year’s CentralDistrict playoffs and the tournament begins today on Sauget Fieldin St. Louis. The host Highlanders (37-19) meet Co-Lin at 4 p.m.The winner plays St. Catharine (Ky.) at 7.

The double-elimination tournament continues Friday.

Last year, Co-Lin beat St. Catharine 14-6 in the first game ofthe tournament. Forest Park beat the Wolves 9-4 in the second game.Co-Lin rebounded to eliminate St. Catharine 18-9 and then beatForest Park 12-5 and 12-2 in the championship game.

Forest Park coach Darin Hendrickson was visibly upset after lastyear’s title game. He has been anticipating a rematch.

“Co-Lin had the best club last year,” said Hendrickson. “Wedidn’t feel bad losing to the best team.”

This year, the Highlanders beat Florissant Valley (Mo.) twostraight games to win Region 16.

“We have better pitching this year,” said Hendrickson. “Weprobably don’t hit it as well and we don’t have a superstar. We aredefense oriented and we have seven guys over .300 (battingaverage). That’s good parity.”

Leading Forest Park is infielder Jake Friederich of Belleville,Ill. He’s batting .409 and has 16 stolen bases.

Sophomore infielder Jeremy Schmersahl is batting .391 andsophomore outfielder Shawn Hampton is batting .397. Outfielder A.J.Otto leads the team in homers with 7.

On the mound, Forest Park is led by sophomore Adam Jahnsen whohas compiled a 7-3 record this season. Sophomore Kevin Moudler is6-3.

Coach Case said sophomore Josh Garrett (6-4)would start on themound today. Garrett is a righthander from Monticello.

Sophomores Jacob Blakeney (6-4), Chris Kennedy (3-1) and ChuckieStracener (4-2) could draw starting assignments on the mound.Freshman Derek Atkins (8-2) beat Hinds Community College Monday inthe regional tournament finals at Fulton, tossing a 4-hitter in the6-2 victory.

Case said David Gray would start at catcher, Brandon Holleman atfirst base, Matt Lea at second base, Kyle Beall at shortstop, BrittHederman at third base, Seth Lofton in left field, Brandon Atkinsin center field and Brett Duncan in right field. Ryan Davis andJason Miles will serve as designated hitters.

Lea is batting .293, Holleman .253, Davis .172, Brandon Atkins.382, Beall .318, Gray .206, Lofton .228, Miles .160, Hederman.286, and Duncan .219.
