BA girls fold in finals

BRANDON -The Brookhaven Academy Lady Cougars finished second toLeake Academy in the finals of the rain-delayed MPSA State AASlowpitch Softball Tournament. Leake won Friday’s opener 16-8 andthe title-clinching finale 21-8.

The Lady Cougars finish the season with a 10-8 record.

The finals were delayed from last Saturday due to a severethunderstorm at the Sports Complex in Brookhaven.

“My girls just weren’t mentally prepared for this series,” saidBA coach Neal King. “We’ll lose three seniors to graduation so I’mlooking forward to next season.”

Leake 21, Brookhaven 8

The Lady Cougars collected 18 hits in the finale. Theywere led by eighth grader Kelli Byrd who went 3-for-3. Collectingtwo hits were Amber Beeson, April Douchard, Angie Davis. Douchardand Davis tripled.

The Lady Rebels finished with 36 hits.

“Leake is a very good team as far opposite field hittinggoes,” said Coach King.

Pitcher Lindsey Holmes started on the mound and CharlieWatts finished.

Leake 16, Brookhaven 8

The Cougars accounted for 18 in the opener. Leading theway were right-center fielder Molly Newman and third basemanAllyson Lofton who went 3-for-3. Beeson tripled. Newman hadinside-the -park homer. Lofton tripled and doubled. BrittanyWilkinson tripled.

Holmes went 6 innings in the opener.
