Johns, Bergold lead list of Co-Lin softball honors

WESSON – Members of the Copiah-Lincoln Community Collegefastpitch softball team have been recognized by the National JuniorCollege Athletic Association and the Mississippi Association ofCommunity and Junior Colleges.
Named to the NJCAA All-Region 23 Team were freshman outfielderTonya Johns of Brookhaven and freshman pitcher Rachel Bergold ofDenham Springs, La. Johns led the Lady Wolves this season inhitting with a .448 average including 10 RBIs. Bergold compiled a21-9 record with an ERA of 1.59.
Sarah Reynolds of Florence, Christi Wallace of Bogue Chitto,Jenny and Janet Chapman, both of Franklin County, were named to theMACJC All-State Team.
Reynolds, a sophomore outfielder, hit .318 for the Lady Wolves.She was recently named a NJCAA Distinguished Academic All-Americanwith a 4.0 grade point average.
A sophomore outfielder, Wallace batted .295 and was second onthe team with 22 RBI’s and 13 stolen bases.
Freshman second baseman Jenny Chapman, a Franklin County HighSchool product, hit .320 with six doubles. Her twin sister, Janet,played shortstop of the Lady Wolves this season, Janet hit 22 andled the team in bases with 15.
In only their first year, the Co-Lin fastpitch softball team,coached by David Smith, compiled a 26-7 record. They placed secondin the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament and the MACJC State FastpitchTournament.
Other awards announced by Coach Smith for the 2001 season wereJohns, Best Offensive Player; Janet Chapman, best defensive player;Rachel Bergold, Most Valuable Player; Tamara West of Monticello,Miss Hustle; Doya Langston of Magee and Davina Sandifer of CrystalSprings, Most Improved.
