State faces Cal State-Fullerton

JACKSON, Miss. (AP) – After winning an NCAA baseball regionalover the weekend in Columbus, Ohio, Mississippi State now must facethe tournament’s top-seeded team, Cal State-Fullerton, in a superregional beginning Friday.

State and Cal State-Fullerton will play in one of eightbest-of-three super regionals, with the winner of each advancing tothe College World Series, which starts June 8 in Omaha, Neb.

The Bulldogs have won 10 of their last 12 games, dating back totheir final regular season series with Ole Miss. They won threestraight in Columbus, beating Kent State twice and Delawareonce.

”I know nobody on our team is satisfied now,” said Bulldogshortstop Matthew Maniscalco. ”Our next goal is the superregional. We don’t want to just go to Omaha, we want to win there.We will not be satisfied with anything less.”

The Titans advanced by beating Temple, Arizona State and TexasTech in a weekend regional at Goodwin Field in Fullerton,Calif.

Other Southeastern Conference teams to make it to a superregional are L-S-U, South Carolina, Georgia, and Tennessee.

The Titans and Bulldogs have played four times, with Cal Statewinning three.

State handed the Titans their only loss on their way to thenational title at the 1979 NCAA College World Series. Cal StateFullerton nipped MSU twice (5-1 and 5-3) in the NCAA South Regionalat Dudy Noble Field in Starkville to advance to the College WorldSeries in 1988.

Cal State also beat State 14-9 in a game in 2000.

The Bulldogs are expected to travel to California on Wednesdayand practice Thursday at Goodwin Field.

Friday’s game is scheduled for 9 p.m. CDT.
