One item might have gone unnoticed in the Saturday vote by theU.S. House of Representatives to pass a 10-year, $1.35 trillion taxcut — bipartisan support.

Fourth District Congressman Ronnie Shows, a Democrat, brokeranks with his party and backed the measure, along with the state’stwo Republican Congressmen, Roger Wicker of District One and ChipPickering of District Three. The other two Democrats, Rep. BennieThompson of District Two and Gene Taylor of District Five, votedagainst the tax cut.

The state’s two senators, Trent Lott and Thad Cochran, bothRepublicans, also supported the plan.

Relief from the tax cut package comes over a 10-year period, butsome results will be felt soon when approximately 95 milliontaxpayers get refunds. The checks, expected to arrive sometimeduring the summer, will range from $300 for singles to $600 formarried couples.

Also included in the plan are some across-the-board rate cuts,the end of the estate tax, an easing of the so-called “marriagepenalty,” and doubling of the tax credit for children to $500.

Rep. Shows said he crossed party lines to help Mississippifamilies.

“Cutting taxes will keep money earned by hard-working parents intheir pockets and give them more control and ability in taking careof their families.”

We agree with him, and we applaud Rep. Shows for putting theneeds of Mississippians ahead of those of the Democratic Party.
