A few Brookhaven residents are in search of talented people whoshare a love for music and a love for bringing sweet melodies tothe area.
An organizational meeting has been set for noon Wednesday atBowie’s restaurant on Magee Drive to begin putting together acommunity orchestra, according to Dr. George Edmonson, who isinvolved in the effort.
“We’re trying to drum up some more people who have played in thepast, and maybe even some who haven’t played but are interested,”said Edmonson.
Susan Jones and Patsy Warren first came up with the idea, and itcaught on quickly, especially with the increased interest in finearts here, he added.
“Since the Mississippi School of Fine Arts will be coming toBrookhaven soon, this should work into our town nicely,” hesaid.
Edmonson pointed out that community orchestras help enrich theculture of an area, among other benefits.
“We’ve been in touch with other communities that haveorchestras, and everybody seems to enjoy it,” said Edmonson. “We’rehoping for the same here.”
Initial response to the idea has been very positive, and mostpeople have been “enthusiastic about it,” said Edmonson.
He hopes anyone interested in the idea will come to theorganizational meeting tomorrow to find out more and offer theiropinions.
The group will involve people of all ages with different typesof instruments needed, like brass, woodwinds and stringedinstruments.
Edmonson also hopes for variety in the hometowns ofparticipants. He does not want it be limited to the Brookhavenarea.
“Anybody from surrounding areas, like Wesson, Monticello,Meadville and Bude, who would like to participate is welcome tocome,” he said.
