Massengill wins; Smith, Allen keep places on board

Businessman Bob Massengill captured a landslide victory in theWard 4 alderman race while incumbent Aldermen Tom Smith and John E.”Buddy” Allen were returned to office, according to unofficialtotals from Tuesday’s general election.

In heavy voter turnout, the Republican Massengill won the Ward 4post with 556 votes to 340 votes for Democratic opponent JerryCase. A former appointed member of the city school board for 11years, Massengill was successful Tuesday in his first run forelected political office.

“A lot of folks got out and voted, and I appreciate that,”Massengill said. “I’m looking forward to serving these next fouryears.”

Succeeding unsuccessful mayoral candidate John Roberts,Massengill will join Alderman at large Les Bumgarner as the board’snewest members when they take office in July. Bumgarner willreplace Henry Newman, who also made an unsuccessful attempt formayor this year.

Massengill said he was looking forward to serving on a unifiedboard and working to improve the entire community.

“If we work in unity, we can accomplish a whole lot,” Massengillsaid.

In a Ward 5 rematch from four years ago, incumbent DemocraticAlderman Smith held on to his post with a 240-180 victory overRepublican John Richardson.

Smith said he was proud of his victory and was appreciative ofthe support he received. He also thanked Richardson for running aclean race.

“I’m going to be back on the board the next four years and tryto do the best I can,” Smith said.

Allen, the Ward 6 Democratic incumbent, retained his seat on theboard with a 271-137 win over Republican challenger and politicalnewcomer Keith Peden. Allen said he wanted to work with allresidents of Ward 6 over the next four years to accomplish thingsfor the area.

“It doesn’t matter who they voted for, I’ll do everything I canto help them solve their problems,” Allen said.
