Mooney’s 74 leads Co-Lin to NJCAA first round lead

JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Freshman Matthew Mooney of Brookhaven shot a2-over-par 74 Tuesday to lead Copiah-Lincoln Community Collegethrough the first round of the NJCAA Division III nationalchampionship golf tournament at Chautauqua Golf Club. Mooney’sround helped the Co-Lin Wolves take a 3-stroke lead over ColumbusState entering today’s second round.

Co-Lin’s other scores featured John Carlton and Wesley Rogers ofNatchez at 76 and 79 respectively and Paxton Lee of LaPlace, La. at80 as the Wolves posted a 309 team score. Mooney is tied for secondin individual scores and Carlton is tied for sixth.

In team scoring, Eastfield was third at 314. Rock Valley andBergen were tied for fourth at 319 and Central Lakes was sixth at319. Host Jamestown was seventh at 323, followed by GeorgiaMilitary at 325 and Burlington County at 326.

Two other Mississippians, Jeremy Stevens of East Central andAdam Napier of Jones County are competing in the national tourney.Stevens shot 81 in the first round and Napier shot 90.

Thirty-six individuals and 100 players representing 13 teams areentered in the competition. Co-Lin is the only 4-person team in thetournament. Most teams have 5 players which allowed for onethrowaway score at the end of each round.
