Grand jury returns 41 indictments

Alcohol and drug cases got most of the attention during an”uneventful” term of the Lincoln County grand jury earlier thisweek, court officials said.

The two-day term produced 41 indictments, according to the grandjury report filed Tuesday in the Lincoln County Circuit Clerk’sOffice.

“It was DUIs and drug cases more than anything,” said CircuitClerk Terry Case Watkins.

Watkins said a sexual battery indictment was returned, and thegrand jurly also issued a child fondling charge.

Indictments are not made public until the accused is served. Thecourt papers have been turned over the sheriff’s department to beserved on the defendants.

Arraignments are scheduled for July 2 before Judge MikeSmith.

According to grand jury report, jurors heard testimony from 49witnesses.

In addition to the 41 indictments, grand jurors continued 16cases for further investigation and returned no bills ofindictments in five cases. No bills are voted on when there isinsufficient evidence or lack of probable cause to believe a crimehas been committed.

The grand jury is in recess until July 23.
