Services for Edith Crawford Smith of Jackson, and formerly ofBrookhaven, are 1 p.m., Thursday, July 26, in the sanctuary ofFirst Baptist Church, Brookhaven, with burial in Rose HillCemetery.

Visitation is Thursday at First Baptist Church Fellowship Hallfrom 11 a.m. until service time.

Mrs. Smith, 92, died July 24, 2001, at Lakeland Health Center inJackson. She was born in Lincoln County on Feb. 12, 1909, to MartinLuther Crawford and Belle Miller Crawford. She was a 1926 graduateof New Sight School and received a Certificate of Teaching fromMississippi College. She resided in Wesson for 15 years on thecampus of Copiah-Lincoln Community College, where her late husbandserved as a professor of science, registrar, and as collegepresident from 1942-46. At that time the family moved toBrookhaven, where Mr. Smith entered private business. In 1988 shemoved to Jackson to be near her daughter.

She was a homemaker and had taught English in the BeauregardSchool in Copiah County for several years. She was a member ofFirst Baptist Church, Brookhaven, where she served in severalpositions in Sunday school, WMU, and the adult choir. She was amember of the building committee responsible for the planning andconstruction of the present sanctuary of First Baptist Church.

Preceding her in death were her parents; her husband, Willie H.Smith; her sister, Colon Crawford Covington; and her brother,William M. “Bill” Crawford.

She is survived by her daughter, Janet Clare Smith ofJackson.
