“Around 9:43 a.m. Monday, someone set two racks of clothes onfire; one in the men’s and one in the women’s department,”Brookhaven Police Department Investigator Roger Wilson said.

Small damage resulted from those fires, with just two pairs ofpants being burned before employees extinguished the blazes,Brookhaven Police Chief Arlustra “Pap” Henderson reported.

The third fire forced authorities to evacuate the store aroundnoon Tuesday as an entire rack of clothing went up in flames.

Authorities were thankful that store employees were able tocontrol the bigger fire before firefighters arrived on thescene.

“They did a very good job on it. Several fire extinguishers wereused,” Henderson said.

Due to the ongoing investigation, store manager John Antoonwould not comment.

Brookhaven authorities, along with the state fire marshal, arenow collecting evidence in hopes of finding the person or personsresponsible.

It appears the fires were started using a cigarette lighter, which also appears to be the instrument used in the Hazlehurstfires.

Authorities will be reviewing footage from the store’s securitysystem, which scans inside and outside the store.

“If anyone in the community was in Wal-Mart around those times,we would appreciate any help we could get,” Hendersonrequested.

The culprit responsible for the Brookhaven fires could possiblybe linked to the Hazlehurst fires.

“We had fires in four different areas of the store… about10:06 a.m. on July 24,” Hazlehurst Fire Chief Jim Harper said.

The arsonist apparently walked through neighboring departmentssetting a variety of items afire.

In the light bulb section, a package of bulbs blazed, but apiece of paper was the only item affected in the nearby paintsection.

“It was just one of those pieces of paper that hangs off a rack, showing the price difference,” Harper said.

A map was destroyed by fire in the automotive section, and theflap of a box was set afire in the sporting goods department, hesaid.

Authorities there are also looking at security tapes, seekingclues along with the state fire marshal.
