Enterprise hosts Hornets for Sting Bowl

After a two-year absence, the Sting Bowl returns Friday night asthe Class 1A Enterprise Yellow Jackets host the Class 2A Loyd StarHornets in a much-anticipated match between Lincoln County rivals.All games kickoff at 7:30 p.m.

In other local games, Brookhaven hosts Vicksburg in their firsthome game at King Field, Brookhaven Academy visits Central Hinds,Franklin County visits Bogue Chitto and Clarkdale is at WestLincoln.

In area action, North Pike invades Wesson in Stone Stadium, WestJones is at Lawrence County, McComb travels to Warren Central, EastRankin is at Copiah Academy, Hazlehurst visits Raymond, Parklanekicks off its season at Amite County Christian School and SouthPike is on the road at Tylertown.

“We feel like it is going to be a good ball game,” saidEnterprise head coach Rickey Deere. “It will be exciting. It’s agood game for all the local people to see.”

Enterprise (1-0) is coming off a 13-0 win at McLaurin.

“We know that they have a good team,” continued Deere. “We arelooking forward to it. We should have a big crowd. We feel like wecan compete with them. We have a lot of respect for them.”

Loyd Star will have to contend with the senior duo of ShermaineVaughn and Bobby Smith. Vaughn rushed for 133 yards on 15 carriesand one TD against McLaurin. Smith followed with nine rushes for 50yards and a touchdown. Defensively, Vaughn led with 11 tacklesfollowed by Smith with 10 stops.

Deere feels there are some keys to winning Friday night. “Weneed to control the football and keep it away from them. We need tokeep them from making the big plays.”

Loyd Star (0-1) suffered a tough 26-0 defeat at the hands ofpowerful Bay Springs last week.

“We feel like we need to get better,” said Loyd Star head coachAnthony Hart. “We need to do better than we did last week.”

Hart stated that some Loyd Star starters will not be making thetrip Friday. “We have starters not playing this week for team rulesviolations.

Against Bay Springs, linebacker Cody Covington led the Hornetswith 13 tackles. Outside linebacker Germaine Hunter had 11tackles.

“We still feel good about the season,” said Hart. “Enterprise isgoing to be very good. They have good backs and linemen. We wereimpressed with them.”

Like Deere, Hart feels the Hornets must do some things to besuccessful. “We have to hold onto the football. We must not misstackles. We are ready to play Friday.”

Brookhaven Academy is coming off a season-opening 42-6whipping of the Copiah Academy Colonels. The 1-0 Cougars face aroad trip to Central Hinds.

Central Hinds was dumped 35-13 by Canton Academy intheir season opener. Central Hinds (0-1) is coached by KennyGranberry,

“They (Central Hinds) are large and they run at you,”said Ishee. “There’s not much finesse about them. They are adifferent type of offense than we have seen this year. They arereal big up front; good kids on defense and offense. Two tight endsand I (formation). They play mostly a power-typegame.”

Cougar senior quarterback Ben Davis sparked Brookhavenlast week with 12 rushes fof 142 yards and two touchdowns.Offensive Player of the Week Adam Smith carried 17 times for126 yards and one TD.

“We are getting ready to play. Our kids are excitedabout it.”

Brookhaven Academy crushed Central Hinds 35-0 lastyear.

West Lincoln is coming off a tough, fumble-filled28-12 loss at the hands of the St. Joseph Bruins. The Bears (0-1)are under the direction of first-year veteran head coach Roe Burnsand face Clarkdale for their first home game.

Clarkdale (1-0) handed Edinburg a 20-6 defeat lastweek.

Wesson, coached by Ronald Greer, entertains thewinless North Pike Jaguars at home in Stone Stadium on the Co-Lincampus. The 1-0 Cobras are coming off a lopsided 40-7 win over theSalem Wildcats.

Coach Adam Barron’s Jaguars fell to Pike Countynemesis South Pike 28-12 in the first meeting between the two teamslast week.

In last year’s matchup, Wesson knocked off NorthPike 28-14.

Lawrence County is coming off a heart-breakingtwo-point, 24-22 loss to Collins. The Monticello-based Cougars areunder the direction of first-year head coach TrentHammond.

Taylorsville held off West Jones for a 17-14 winlast week.
