Cobras slay Prentiss; improve record to 3-0

PRENTISS – The Class 2A Wesson Cobras overcame an 8-7first-quarter deficit to punch out a 19-8 win over the Class 3APrentiss Bulldogs Friday night. It was the first-ever meetingbetween the two schools.
Wesson improved to 3-0 on the season and Prentiss is winless inthree outings.
“Our defense played pretty well,” said Wesson head coach RonaldGreer. “We moved the ball consistently. Then we hit a lull.
“We must get more consistent,” Greer continued. “Prentiss hassome talent and they were big. We were lucky to get out of therewith the win.”
Wesson fullback Russell Robinson scored the first touchdown on athree-yard run and Nick Gunter kicked his only extra point kick ofthe night.
Prentiss went up 8-7 at the end of the first quarter but Wessoncame back in the second quarter for a 13-8 lead following a 43-yardtouchdown run by wingback Marcus Corley. The run for two pointsfailed.
Following a scoreless third quarter, the Cobras tacked on theirfinal TD of the game, coming on a 28-yard burst by quarterbackJason Shannon. The PAT kick failed due to a high snap fromcenter.
Powering the Cobra running game with eight rushes for 69 yardswas Corley. Tailback Ryan Williams picked up 46 yards on eightcarries.
Shannon completed 2 of 3 passes for 11 yards. Robinson went1-for-3 for six yards. Tom Burgess caught one pass for seven yards.Catching one pass for six yards was Corley. Richie Miller finishedwith one catch for four yards.
On defense, linebacker Billy Ray Miller led Wesson with13 tackles. Corley, at free safety, collected 11 tackles. Robinsonand Emanuel Sinclair made 10 tackles apiece. Charles Powell, JohnDecker and Sinclair recovered a fumble apiece.
Wesson (3-0) will host Franklin County Friday night atStone Stadium. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m.
