Thanks to the recently formed Ole Brook Athletic Club, the OleBrook Run has been revived. It will be held Saturday, Sept. 29, inconjunction with the Ole Brook Festival. The Ole Brook AthleticClub is in charge of the event and 13 sponsors are providingsupport for the 8 a.m. start.
It will be a 5K (3.1 mile) run and walk, plus a one mile fun runfor children age 15 and under. Leisure walkers are encouraged toparticipate, too.
The run will start at the Chamber of Commerce Building on thecorner of West Chickasaw and South Whitworth. The streets ofJackson, Storm and Church, featuring lots of beautiful and historichomes, will be incorporated in the running route. The race willconclude on Cherokee Street, in front of the Haven Theater.
Prize money will be presented to all age groups instead ofmedals. A portion of the entry fees will be donated to the KidsKingdom.
Cash prizes will be awarded to the winners of the race in eachage division. “The idea is to give them money which they will spendat the Ole Brook Festival,” said Richard Barker, run director. “Wewant to involve the people who participate in the race to becomeinvolved in the festival.”
Most of the age groups will receive $25 for first place. Overallrace winners will receive $50.
Hopefully, the weather will be cooler in two weeks.
Friday night’s memorial ceremony prior to Brookhaven HighSchool’s football game was very meaningful. The R.O.T.C. colorguard marched to the middle of King Field for the playing of theNational Anthem. The crowd observed a moment of silence in memoryof the victims of the terrorist attacks in New York and Washington,D.C. Then they sang “God Bless America.”
The Rev. Dr. Greg Warnock, of First Baptist Church, provided theinvocation. It felt good to hear someone offering a pregame prayerfor the first time in two years. The ACLU had been instrumental inremoving the time-honored procedure of public prayer prior togames. President Bush urged the nation to pray last Friday and manyof us responded in unity.
If the ACLU complains again about public prayer, the wholeorganization should be packed up and shipped to the front lines inAfghanistan.
Life took on a new perspective Sept. 11. Obviously, football isjust a game, not a life and death situation. Football is fun andProfessor Hoopla , B.S., is trying to have fun when he picks thewinners of these weekend contests. Hoopla will start with aThursday night community college special.
