Allen helps Panhers dominate Raymond

Senior tailback Cornelius Allen and the Brookhaven Panthersdominated the Raymond Rangers in last Friday’s 42-20 Region 6-4Awin. It was Brookhaven’s first region test of the 2001 season undernew head coach Andrew Hickman.

Allen, who stands 5-foot-10 and weighs in at 180 pounds, poweredthe Panthers with 25 carries for 166 yards and the first threeBrookhaven touchdowns of the game. He scored on runs of 3, 9 and 2yards as the Panthers (3-1, 1-0) roared to a 21-0 halftimelead.

For his achievements, Allen has been named The DailyLeader’s Offensive Player of the Week for the fourth week of the2001 football season.

“I feel great,” said Allen about being Offensive Player ofthe Week. Allen runs a 40 in 4.6. He bench presses 285 pounds andsquats 355 pounds.

When asked about last Friday’s victory over Raymond, Allensaid, “I loved it. Prayed real hard all week. Good things happenedto us. The team played good as a whole.”

Allen enjoys his tailback role, especially getting his handsof the football. His favorite play is the ‘stretch.’

“He runs hard off tackle,” Coach Hickman explained. “Thelinemen block. He picks his own hole to run through.”

Allen said his offensive line was good and strong. Theyinclude Kenneth Fairman, center; Kern Hoff, strong guard; DanielWalker, strong tackle; Jesse Bowman, quick guard and RayshoneAutman, quick tackle.

Allen added that nose guard Tremale McArther did a good jobon defense.

The Panthers have the same goals as all teams do eachseason. Allen and his teammates want to win their region and thengo to the playoffs.

Coach Hickman added, “We want to play at home (King Field)in the first round.”

Allen says he has enjoyed working under Hickman. “He hasdone so much for us.”

Brookhaven faces a road trip to Port Gibson Friday night.Allen feels they need to work hard in practice to beready.

Allen is also a track star for the Panthers. He runs the 100meters and the relays

After he graduates, Allen said he would like to continueplaying college level football. He is undecided on amajor.

His favorite college football team is the Florida StateSeminoles.

In the NFL, he likes the Dallas Cowboys. Emmett Smith is hisfavorite professional player.
