Enterprise dances to homecoming victory

Friday night’s homecoming festivities at Enterprise featured apregame fireworks display. The Yellow Jackets continued the eveningwith an impressive offensive display as they crushed the SalemWildcats 56-20 on Harry Cole Field.

Directing the attack was senior tailback Shermaine Vaughn whoexploded for 143 yards rushing plus a 77-yard punt return. Atlinebacker, he led the Enterprise defense with 14 tackles and aquarterback sack.

Enterprise improved to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Region 4-1A play.Salem remained winless (0-4, 0-3) but the gritty Wildcats kept thefans interested for most of the game as tailback Rodney Bridgesrushed 27 times for 164 yards and 1 touchdown.

Salem had pulled within a touchdown, 21-14, in the third quarterbefore Vaughn electrified the large partisan crowd with his return.He ran the 2-point conversion for a 29-14 lead.

“I cut back right and saw some daylight,” said Vaughn. “I gotsome pretty good blocks.”

The Jackets tacked on 2 more quick touchdowns as quarterbackJustin Kyzar hooked up with Rufus Allen on a 60-yard connection andfound Monti Crotwell on a 45-yarder. Scott Sassers’s 2 PAT kicksmade it 43-14 with 7:55 left in the game.

“It was a 31 X-Fly,” said Kyzar, recalling the TD pass play toCrotwell. “Our line blocked real good.”

Enterprise took a 13-0 halftime lead. After stopping Salem onfourth down at the Enterprise 23, the Jackets flew 77 yards n 7plays, with Vaughn streaking the final 33 around right end.

Sasser’s PAT kick put Enterprise up 7-0 with 6:07 left in thefirst quarter.

Another 77-yard TD march ended with senior fullback Bobby Smithcovering the final 11 yards around left end, with Vaughn furnishinga key block.

“We started slow and finished fast,” said Enterprise head coachRicky Deere. “Salem is a lot better than people think. They gotpumped up.

“That punt return by Vaughn took some air out of them,” Deerepointed out. It’s good to win homecoming.”

Coach Kenneth Murphy’s Wildcats capitalized on a fumble to startthe second half when Smith misplayed the Salem kickoff at his 19.Four plays later, Cody Nichols scored from 2 yards out. Josh Holmeskicked the PAT and Salem trailed 13-7.

On the ensuing kickoff, Enterprise’s Pierre Harthorne scooped upthe football at his 27 and raced 73 yards to paydirt. Kyzar passedto Rufus Allen on the PAT and Enterprise led 21-7.

Bridges, a 155-pound senior, went 65 yards on first down and theWildcats were within 21-14 with 9:40 left in the third quarter.

After Enterprise’s 4 unanswered touchdowns, Salem trailed 50-14.A 24-yard run by Will Sicard provided the fourth TD in theexplosion.

Enterprise got a 3-yard TD run by Dusty “Tater” Smith as thefinal horn sounded. Deere elected not to try for a conversion.

On defense, Vaughn was followed by Chase Raiford and Bobby Smithwho each had 9 tackles. Kody Burns made 8 tackles.

The Jackets travel to Stringer Friday night for another regiontest.
