RIDGELAND – Senior running back Derrick Johnson rushed for 145yards on 11 carries and scored three touchdowns to direct the LoydStar Hornets to a lopsided 40-6 Region 6-2A win over the St.Andrew’s Saints Friday night. Johnson scored on runs of 7, 8 and 67yards. He has 950 yards on the season.

Loyd Star, coached by Anthony Hart, improved to 2-1 in theregion and is tied for second place with St. Andrew’s. The Hornetsimproved to 6-2 overall and the Saints fell to 2-6 with theloss.

Johnson scored his first touchdown in the first quarter on aseven-yard run. Jody Britt kicked his first of four extra points togive Loyd Star a 7-0 lead over St. Andrew’s.

In the second quarter, Johnson recorded his second TD for theHornets on an eight-yard burst but failed on the attemptedtwo-point conversion. At halftime, Loyd Star led 13-0.

The Hornets added three more touchdowns in the third quarter togroup 33-0. Johnson posted his final TD on a 67-yard run, DemarcusBarnes scored on a one-yard run, and quarterback Cass Brister hitJody Britt on a 60-yard pass-play.

In the final frame, Barnes returned a punt 72 yards for atouchdown that pushed Loyd Star’s lead over St. Andrew’s to40-0.

The Saints came back with a touchdown in the final minute ofplay to prevent the shut out.

Brister completed 3 of 5 passes for 104 yards and wasintercepted once. Jody Bright caught one pass for 60 yards. LoganPortray made one catch for 33 yards and Barnes had one catch foreight yards.

Following Johnson on the Loyd Star ground game was Barnes withsix runs for 25 yards. Adam Speeg rushed for 15 yards on fourcarries.

Loyd Star was penalized three times for 25 yards.xz

Defensively, Cody Covington and Johnson paced theHornets with 13 tackles apiece. Matthew Delaughter made 10 stops.Adam Speeg had nine tackles and recovered a fumble. Donovan Carnleyfollowed with eight tackles.
