MONTICELLO – The Lawrence County Cougars defeated the TerryBulldawgs 62-28 in Region 6-4A high school football action Fridaynight. The Cougars used just 18 offensive plays to score touchdownson all seven of their first-half possessions en route to thelopsided win. LCHS had over 400 yards in total offense prior to theintermission.
With the win, Coach Trent Hammond’s Cougars improved to 7-1overall and 3-1 in Region 6-4A play. Terry fell to 3-4 overall and0-4 in the region. While pleased with the win, Hammond regrettedseeing the game turn a bit toward the ugly side.
“Our kids did a great job,” Hammond said. “We had an awful lotof respect for Terry after having seen them on film. We (thecoaches) all felt that we were in for a four-quarter battle for adivision win. There’s no way we expected to score 48 points beforehalftime.
“Our offensive execution was outstanding in the first half. Wewere able to get some very young people some carries even beforehalftime.
“Unfortunately, there weren’t many happy campers on either sidewhen this game ended,” he continued. “Perhaps some of their kidsgot a little frustrated with the way things were going. In turn, they really lit the fuses of some of our kids. That’s unfortunate. We’re just happy to have this one behind us. I’m pleased, that forthe most part, our kids kept their cool.”
The fuse of Lawrence County’s offense was lit for the wholenight. After Terry drove and scored on the opening drive, on a25-yard Jamie Mack-to-Toronto Knight pass, the Cougars respondedimmediately. Wayne Hardy rushed for 13 yards on the first play fromscrimmage, then Jason Snell swept the right side for 53 yards and atouchdown. Jonathan Eley’s PAT kick tied the game at 7-7 just fiveminutes into the game.
Moments later, Snell intercepted a Terry pass and returned it tothe Bulldog 26-yard line. After Eley got the Cougars close, WayneHardy scored on a seven-yard run to give Lawrence County a 14-7lead.
It was another huge night for Hardy, a senior who had nevercarried the football in a high school game until this season. Hardyrushed six times for 178 yards and four touchdowns. In LawrenceCounty’s last three games, Hardy has rushed for 450 yards and seventouchdowns on a total of 17 carries.
Later in the first quarter, after a Bulldog punt, the Cougarsdrove 79 yards in seven plays. The final 31 yards came on two Hardyruns, including a 30-yard touchdown jaunt. Eley’s kick made it 21-7after one quarter.
On Lawrence County’s first two plays of the second quarter,Hardy scored on runs of 76 and 31 yards. Terry, which had brieflyled 7-0, trailed 34-7 midway through the second quarter.
The Bulldog offense did have a fairly productive night, amassing244 yards in total offense. Terry put together a 60-yard drivewhich culminated with an 18-yard touchdown run by Robert Fortson. That made it 34-14 and the Bulldogs were still somewhat in thegame.
They weren’t in it for long. It took the Cougars just threeplays to go 66 yards in response. Sophomore Donavan Dixon scoredhis first career touchdown on a 20-yard run to make it 42-14 asquarterback Casey Williams ran for two points.
Just one minute later, after a Josh Wilson fumble recovery, Eleyburst up the middle for 47 yards and a score, his 14th of theseason. It was another solid night for the veteran campaigner whorushed ten times for 124 yards, breaking many tackles along theway.
Leading 48-14, the Cougars actually got one more shot on thelast play of the half. Snell intercepted his second pass of thenight and returned it 40 yards to the Bulldog 17. LCHS chose aconservative running play, however, mercifully bringing the half toa close.
In the second half, the clock was allowed to run freely, stopping only after scores and at the quarter break. Still, bothteams found times for some offense. First, LCHS got a 52-yardscoring run from freshman Chris Jefferson. that made it a 55-14game. Terry responded immediately with a 52-yard run by Keoni Gray, putting the margin to 55-21.
Taking advantage of a LCHS fumble, Terry got another touchdownout of Fortson in the fourth quarter. The Cougars’ final score ofthe night came on a 35-yard pass from Casey Williams to DonavanDixon.
This Friday, Lawrence County will visit Raymond in anotherRegion 6-4A game.
