BA Cougars rally past Centreville

CENTREVILLE – The Brookhaven Academy Cougars rallied to knockoff the Centreville Academy Tigers 24-21 Friday night innon-district football action.

The Cougars, coached by Ray Ishee, improved to 8-1 on the seasonand remain 1-1 in District 4-AA play. The Tigers fall to 6-3 on theseason and remain 2-0 in District 4-AAA action.

Brookhaven Academy trailed Centreville Academy 21-18 going intothe fourth quarter. Cougar senior runningback Jeffrey Waycastercaught an 8-yard pass from senior quarterback Ben Davis for thegame-winning touchdown. Adam Smith kicked the PAT.

Centreville went up 7-0 in the first quarter on a 14-yard run byJohn Vincent followed by an extra-point kick by Royce Fonte.

Brookhaven came back to score on a 1-yard carry by Smith butmissed the extra point, cutting Centreville’s lead to 7-6.

In the second quarter, the Tigers went back up 14-6 on a 31-yardpass from from Jimmy Steel to Blake Devall and Fonte’s PATkick.

The Cougars answered with 11 points to take a 17-14 lead overthe Tigers at halftime. Jeffrey Waycaster scored on a 14-yard runand Collins Case ran the two-point conversion for eight points.Smith added a 31-yard field goal to make it 11 points.

In the third quarter, Centreville went back on top 21-17 on afive-yard run by John Newman and a Fonte kick.

Davis completed 8 of 14 passes for 157 yards for the Cougars.Paul Coker caught four passes for 83 yards and Waycaster made fourcatches for 74 yards.

Davis also led the Brookhaven ground game with 20 carries for130 yards. Smith rushed for 34 yards on 11 carries. Ryan Nix rushed12 times for 32 yards. Following with three runs for 33 yards wasWaycaster.

On defense, senior defensive back Chad Lagrone led with ninetackles. Eight stops were made by Cal Hodges. Waycaster, BlakeKillingsworth and Tyler Lofton finished with seven tackles apiece.Will Rushing intercepted a pass.

Brookhaven Academy visits Woodville Friday to meet WilkinsonCounty Christian Academy (6-3, 2-0) for a District 4-AA game.Kickoff is 7:30 p.m.
