Services for Dr. John Wesley Payne of Brookhaven are 3 p.m.,Tuesday, Nov. 13, at Brookhaven Funeral Home Chapel with burial inEasthaven Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 5-9 p.m. at the funeral home.

Dr. Payne, 93, died Nov. 11, 2001, at his residence. He was bornin Pueblo, Colo., on Dec. 3, 1907, to James Barney Payne and AmandaHouchen Payne. He received the A.B. and L.H.D. degrees fromMorningside College and the Bachelor of Divinity and Master ofDivinity Degrees from Garrett Theological Seminary in Evanston,Ill.

He served pastorates in both the Nebraska and Iowa conferencesof the Methodist Church from 1929-49. In 1947-48 he was dean of theIowa-Des Moines Methodist Conference Youth Institute at Clear Lake,Iowa. From 1949-51 he was chaplain and associate director ofGoodwill Industries of Philadelphia. From 1951-62 he was executivedirector of Goodwill Industries of Baltimore. He became director ofthe Denver Goodwill in 1962 and headed the Goodwill in Stockton,Calif., from 1968-77. He served as state treasurer for theCalifornia Association of Rehabilitation Facilities, treasurer ofthe Council of California Goodwill Industries, and was pastpresident of the San Joaquin County Coordinating Council forMentally Retarded.

In 1984 he moved to Brookhaven and helped to establish theBrookhaven Food Pantry, delivered Meals on Wheels, and served as asubstitute pastor for numerous churches. He was chaplain of the 50Plus Club, was a member of the LLL Club, and the Masonic Lodge. Hewas a member of Rocky Mountain United Methodist Conference andattended Jackson Street United Methodist Church.

Preceding him in death were his parents, and his daughter,Phyllis Warns.

Survivors are his wife, Beulah Masterson Payne of Brookhaven;his daughters and son-in-law, Priscilla Copeland and Carolyn andFloyd Hoover, all of Brookhaven; and nine grandchildren, 26great-grandchildren, and seven great-great-grandchildren.
