Brook swamps Franklin County

MEADVILLE – Aneidra Stanton and Fred Mackabee of Brookhaven madethe plays, as coaches Dan Presley and Ronald Gill ran the show in aFriday night doubleheader sweep of the Bulldogs for the first timesince 1998.

Brookhaven won the girls contest 86-39, while the boys coastedto a 60-43 victory. The Panthers resume play Nov. 27 at homeagainst Jackson Bailey, while the Bulldogs travel to CrystalSprings for a key Region 7-3A battle.

The Lady Panthers (4-1) controlled the gamefrom the start, as Stanton and junior Shamika Gilmore led the girlsto a comfortable 38-22 halftime advantage. Stanton and Gilmorecombined for 20 points and six steals, during their first half ofplay.

In the second half, Brookhaven kept the tempo the same as LadyPanther coach Ronald Gill allowed every player on his rosterplaying time. The Lady Panthers ended the game leading everystatical catergory from rebounding (50-27) to turnovers where thePanthers committed 12 to the Lady Dawgs’ 32.

“I’m proud of how our girls played tonight,” said Gill. “We gota chance to play everybody for a change, and that helps with depthand experience. Overall, it was a good win for us after losingMonday to Natchez.”

Gill’s girls were led by Stanton with 21 points, eight steals,six rebounds, and three assists. Gilmore added 11 points and sevenrebounds.

For the Lady Dawgs (0-6), junior Dedire Gant led all scorerswith 24 points and seven rebounds. Junior Yolanda Felton chipped ineight points and two assists.

The Panthers (5-1) used the talented skills ofsenior guard/forward Fred Mackabee to set the momentum meterBrookhaven’s way off layups and several powerful and athletic dunksen route to a 31-13 advantage at intermission.

The Bulldogs (1-5) entered the second half on a six point runthat was highlighted by several slice and dice moves from juniorpoint guard Bobby Henderson. But the Panthers had several answerswaiting for the Dawgs, with one being a strong two handed alley-oopfrom Brandon Caston to Mackabee. The Panthers closed the thirdframe out leading 43-27.

As the fourth quarter rolled along, the Panthers went to theirtalneted reserves to end the game. Nearly every Panther player whodressed out was allowed playing time as the Dawgs used theirregular 10 man front.

“We’re still playing soft and weak,” said Bulldog head coachChris Jordan. “We had a football player with three days of practiceleading us in scoring and rebounding tonight. Our starters aregoing to have to step it up for us to be sucessful.”

Jordan’s Dawgs were led by junior Josh (Freak) Bradford with 12points and 10 rebounds. Bradford (6-1, 230) played as an offensivelinemen on the Bulldog football team. He began practice with theDawgs Wedensday.

For the Panthers, Mackabee led with 13 points, six rebounds,three steals, and two blocks. Center Lamar Hall added 10 points,six rebounds, and two steals.
