Wesson Cobras run over Scott Central

WESSON – The 11-1 Wesson Cobras were on a roll Friday night atStone Stadium and they weren’t going to be denied as theyeliminated the Scott Central Rebels 20-7 from the Class 2A statefootball playoffs. Seven turnovers helped the Rebelsself-destruct.

“We are tickled to death to win,” said Wesson head footballcoach Ronald Greer after the game. “Scott Central has a lot of goodathletes. They’ve improved.”

Wesson advances to the third round of the state playoffs andfaces Region 6 archrival Loyd Star (10-2) which eliminated Newton20-7 Friday night. Wesson defeated Loyd Star 28-9 on Oct. 12 inRegion 6-2A season play.

The Rebels finish the season 6-6.

“Wesson is a good football team,” said Scott Central head coachMickey Bounds following the game. “We came back and gave a goodeffort. I wish we could have played a better game.”

Following a scoreless first quarter, Cobra runningback RussellRobinson scampered for a three-yard touchdown to cap an 85-yardscoring drive. Nick Gunter’s extra point kick bounced off theuprights and back onto the field. Wesson led 6-0 with 8:18 left inthe second quarter.

At the 1:35 mark, senior runningback Billy Ray Miller brokeloose for a 24-yard TD to push Wesson’s lead to 13-0 followingGunter’s PAT kick in the second quarter. Rebel punter RoderickLoper fumbled the fourth-down snap and the Cobras recovered to setup the one-play scoring drive. before halftime.

Miller powered the Wesson running game with 11 rushes for 146yards. Robinson carried six times for 38 yards and Ryan Williamsfollowed with 26 yards on six rushes.

“I feel good about the win,” Miller stated. “I’m just happywhere we are now. We have a big game next week.”

On the third-quarter kickoff, Wesson senior runningback MarcusCorley took the football and returned it 82 yards down the leftsideline for a quick six points. Gunter’s kick pushed the Cobraslead to 20-0 over the Rebels.

“I saw a lane and I cut around,” said an exhausted Corleyfollowing the win. “It feels good. I just want the statechampionship.”

Scott Central never quit. The Rebels drove the football 89 yardsin four plays and punched in a touchdown on a 48-yard run by seniorrunningback James Washington. With 1:53 remaining in the game, IvanMora Garcia kicked the PAT and cut the deficit to 20-7.

The Rebels tried an onside kick but Robinson recovered for theCobras at the Wesson 45-yard line and ran out the clock.

Both teams had their share of turnovers. Wesson was 4-3 infumbles and Scott Central was 5-4.

Defensively, Ryan Williams and Miller led Wesson with 13tackles apiece. Charles Powell and Matt Dyess collected eighttackles apiece. Matt Ishman and McCormick finished with seventackles. Intercepting a pass apiece were Corley for a 22-yardreturn, Williams for a 10-yard return and McCormick for a 14-yardreturn. Powell recovered a fumble for a five- yardreturn.
