County schools show some financial progress

Lincoln County School officials continue to look for ways toimprove the district’s bookkeeping system and financial situationafter a disclaimer was issued earlier this year.

She talked with board members about upcoming revenues andexpenditures and what to expect during the next few months. All waspositive news for board members.

Shelby also informed the board about how the business office wasclearing up and following up on outstanding checks and money notrecorded properly in financial records.

Shelby has spent the last few months working with financialconsultant Frank Fortenberry and Ronnie Watson, a state-appointedfinancial advisor, to clear up the bookkeeping system after theformer business manager resigned following an inconclusiveaudit.

Fortenberry’s contract is nearing end, and board members optedlast night to retain his services for a fee, which will cover anyphone conversations, said Superintendent of Education PerryMiller.

The business department has also continued to organize thebookkeeping system by reducing the district’s number of bankaccounts from around 40 to about 10.

“We are streamlining accounts and that’s been difficult,” Millertold board members, adding that it seems to have improved theefficiency of the bookkeeping system.

School board members were pleased with the improvements,complimenting Shelby on her efforts.

The next scheduled meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m., Dec. 3, atWoodmen of the World on Industrial Park Road.
