Wreck kills mom, her son

LAWRENCE COUNTY — A woman and her child died Monday morningwhen their vehicle hit another on a slippery road, according toauthorities.

Phyllis Hill, 32, and her four-year-old son, Johnny, both ofMonticello, died around 8:25 a.m. when Hill’s vehicle spun intooncoming traffic, said Lawrence County Coroner Dr. Joe Ward.

“Their death was instantaneous as a direct result of the crash,”Ward said.

Lawrence County Sheriff Joel Thames said road and weatherconditions at the time of the accident were factors in the cause ofthe crash.

“The road was wet, and it appeared that the victim, Mrs. Hill,hydroplaned,” Thames explained.

Hill’s car then struck a vehicle driven by Falana Green, 32, ofMonticello, who had two children in her vehicle.

“They (Green and two children) were all transported to LawrenceCounty Memorial,” Thames said. “They were treated for minor bruisesand cuts and then released.”

The Monticello Fire Department was called to the scene to usethe Jaws of Life to remove the Hills from their vehicle.

Ward said their deaths had a tremendous impact on thecommunity.

“This time of the year it’s even more disheartening,” hecommented.

Laird Funeral Services in Lucas is handling funeral arrangementsfor the Hills.
