BA teams sweep Bowling Green

The host Brookhaven Academy Cougars kicked off District 4-AAaction Tuesday night with a pair of wins over the Bowling GreenBuccaneers of Franklinton, La., in John R. Gray Gymnasium.
Senior center Paul Coker’s 16 points and five rebounds poweredthe Cougars to a 58-27 win over the Bucs.
In the girls game, senior Anna Gatlin fired in 16 points andgrabbed four rebounds in sparking Brookhaven Academy to a 52-30victory over Bowling Green.
The Cougars (5-1, 1-0) jumpedout to a 13-2 lead over the Buccaneers at the end of the firstquarter. Brookhaven led Bowling Green 30-9 at halftime. A 20-6 runin the third quarter but Brookhaven on top 50-15 going into thefinal frame.
“We did a good job,” said Brookhaven Academy boys coach DaleWatts after the win. “I was real pleased. We are progressing. Westill have a ways to go.”
Contributing to the Cougar win with 15 points and four reboundswas Alex Davis. Scoring nine points was Jimmy Latham. JohnathanWatts had six assists. Leading with three steals was JonathanWinborne.
Bowling Green got 11 points from Adam Hughes.
The undefeated Lady Cougars (9-0, 1-0) jumpedout to an 18-4 lead capped by a three-point shot at the buzzer byAbby Williams. At the half, Brookhaven Academy held a 30-16lead.
The Lady Cougars pushed their lead to 36-21 going into the finalframe where the hosts outscored the visitors 16-9 and cruised tothe win.
“We played hard,” said Brookhaven Academy girls coach BarryGray. “They like to compete. We did a good job guarding No. 21(Katie Thames).”
Ancy Myers fired n 12 points, grabbed eight rebounds and madefive steals for the Lady Cougars. Kelli Byrd followed with ninepoints, four rebounds, five steals and six assists. Lauren Smithmade three steals and had five assists.
For Bowling Green, Emily Barris led the way with 11 points. Highscorer Katie Thomas was held to seven points by the BrookhavenAcademy defense.
Junior High Games
In the boys game, Brookhaven Academy dumped BowlingGreen 66-57. Cole Hodges sparked Brookhaven Academy with 21 points.Seth Davis netted 15 followed by Jeremy Winborne with10.
Adam Thames and Lee Adams led Bowling Green with 14points apiece.
The Brookhaven Academy girls posted a lopsided 47-19victory over Bowling Green. Emily Langley led the way with 18points for the hosts. Maddie Allen finished with eightpoints.
Lauren Williams netted five points for BowlingGreen.
Brookhaven Academy visits Columbia Academy for districtaction Friday night.
