BA teams wallop WCCA

It was a Gray night. Brookhaven Academy girls coach Barry Gray’sLady Cougars squared off against older brother Rickey Gray’sWilkinson County Christian Academy Lady Rams Tuesday night in JohnR. Gray Gymnasium in a District 4-AA match. The Lady Cougars hadtoo much firepower and handed the Lady Rams a 61-24 defeat, led byAncy Myers and Leah Davis with 10 points apiece.

In the varsity boys game, Paul Coker fired in 12 points andJimmy Latham netted 11 points in leading the Cougars to a 57-26 winover the Rams.

The Lady Cougars improved to 17-1 overall and 3-0 in districtplay. The Lady Rams fell to 7-5 on the season.

“Everybody played great,” said Brookhaven coach Barry Grayfollowing the win. “We played good half-court defense. Our passinggame was a lot better.”

Adding support to the Brookhaven win with eight rebounds, foursteals and three assists was Anna Gatlin. Kelli Byrd and JessieAltman grabbed five rebounds.

Leading WCCA with nine points was Jennifer Tolbert.

The Cougars went up 21-0 at the end of the first quarter and led33-0 before Jasco Reed netted two points for the Rams. At the half,Brookhaven commanded a 36-4 lead. Reed led WCCA with eightpoints.

“I was real pleased with the guys,” said Brookhaven Academy boyscoach Dale Watts. “On the offensive and defensive ends. We wereworking on our offensive timing and defensive intensity andtogetherness.”

With the win, the Brookhaven boys remain undefeated in districtaction at 3-0 and are 13-2 overall. WCCA fell to 5-7.

Tops off the backboards for Brookhaven was Ryan Cannon with fiverebounds. Blocking two shots apiece were Alex Davis and JonathanStrong.

In a recent 74-43 loss to top-ranked Central Private atWoodville, Craig Smith paced the Brookhaven boys with 12 points.Jonathan Winborne followed with nine points.

Junior High Games

The Brookhaven Academy girls stomped WCCA 38-10, sparked byEmily Langley’s eight points. Kaci Williams had five points.

The Cougars whipped the Rams 58-17. Steven Covington had 13point for Brookhaven. Scoring 10 points apiece were Joseph Hart andWesley Taylor.

Brookhaven Academy visits Centreville Academy Friday.
