Burns leads Co-Lin past Delgado

WESSON – Tiania Burns is making the best of her journey fromNashville, Tenn. to Copiah-Lincoln Community College. The multitalented guard is gradually adapting to small-town life while shemakes a big impact with the Co-Lin Lady Wolves.
Burns pumped in 25 points Tuesday night, leading unbeaten (10-0)Co-Lin to an 83-58 trouncing of New Orleans-based Delgado CommunityCollege. She also had 4 assists, 3 steals and several niftypasses.
“Junior college basketball is a challenge for me but I have toplay better,” said Burns. “I didn’t have a real good gametonight.”
Burns said she enjoys the family atmosphere at Co-Lin. “We are aclose team. Co-Lin is like family to me.”
A Mississippi State signee out of Pearl Cohn High School, Burnsfell just short of the required ACT score to make her eligible as afreshman at MSU. Her decision to attend Co-Lin pleased Co-Linwomen’s coach Gwyn Young.
“Tiania does a good job for us,” said Young. “She’s a goodplayer.”
Burns had plenty of help last night. Sophomore post playersMindy Livaudais and Christy Brown each scored 12 points and helpeddominate the backboards. Brown grabbed 13 rebounds and Livaudais 11as the Lady Wolves howled to a 36-19 halftime lead.
“We did a pretty good job on defense but we got sloppy inspots,” said Young. “We missed 21 shots from the lane in the firsthalf.”
Two straight field goals by Burns, the second off an assist fromLaurie Ann Davis, gave Co-Lin a 60-35 lead with 9:10 left in thegame.
Delgado (5-12) got 16 second-half points from LaShonda Lewis, a5-7 sophomore from New Orleans.
“Delgado is quick and they have a lot of speed,” said Young. “Weweren’t quite as rusty as I expected us to be,” after the holidaylayoff.
Young said he expected a stronger test Monday night when EastCentral invades Mullen Gymnasium for a South Division test. Tipoffis 6 p.m.
