Bogue Chitto flexes muscles in Bears’ den

Bogue Chitto enjoyed a rare varsity sweep Friday night in WestLincoln’s Jack Case Gymnasium. The Lady Bobcats posted a 40-34victory and the Bobcats held off a late rally to beat the Bears70-66.

The victory assured the Bogue Chitto boys (13-7, 9-1) of No. 1seeding the Division 7-1A Tournament which begins Feb. 11 in BogueChitto’s Calhoun Gymnasium. The Lady Bobcats (14-5, 8-2) will beseeded second behind Enterprise.

West Lincoln’s boys (10-12, 5-4) struggled through aturnover-filled first half before finding the right combination.They trailed the Bobcats 35-20 at halftime, committing 22turnovers.

Guard Cody Mitchell, the only senior in West Lincoln’s lineup,sparked a strong second half surge by the Bears. Mitchell scored 15of his game-high 28 points in the fourth quarter and hit 4treys.

“I thought our team gave a good effort,” said West Lincoln coachAndy Smithie. His Bears committed 32 turnovers in the game.

Bogue Chitto held an 11-point, 52-41 lead entering the fourthquarter. A large, partisan crowd watched Mitchell and Sam Collinsdirect the Bears’ comeback. Two free throws by Collins gave thehosts a 64-63 lead with 51 seconds left in the game.

That’s when Domenick Addison stepped up for Bogue Chitto. Thesenior forward cashed in a steal with a layup for a 65-64advantage. Addison made another steal and set up a trey by MichaelBlackwell, giving the Bobcats a 68-64 advantage with 26 secondsleft. Denard Ferguson’s last-second putback sealed the victory.

Senior guard Carlos Brown led the Bobcats with 18 points, 10rebounds and 10 steals. Blackwell pumped in 15 points, netting 3treys. Addison accounted for 14 points and 9 rebounds. BrianWallace made 11 points and 6 steals.

“We had some breakdowns in the second half,” said Bogue Chittoboys coach Theo Black. “Domenick didn’t give up. He gave us thekind of senior leadership we needed.”

Collins collected 14 points and 5 rebounds for the Bears whowill be seeded third in the division tournament. Luke Lofton added10 points and 9 rebounds.

The Lady Bears (16-6, 6-3) also will be seeded third in thedivision playoffs. Bogue Chitto avoided foul trouble and kept theLady Bears off the charity line most of the game. West Lincolnattempted 6 free throws and made 3 compared to Bogue Chitto’swoeful 15 of 37 showing.

“Defensively we played real well,” said Bogue Chitto girls coachMickey Myers. “That poor free throw shooting is going to age me ina hurry.”

Junior guard Randi Moak directed the victory with 16 points.Marquita Ratcliff grabbed 10 rebounds. Playmaker Jessica Melton had6 rebounds and 5 assists.

West Lincoln was led by guard Dana King’s 15 points. Holli Basshad 6 rebounds and Hannah Johnson 5.

Junior Varsity Results

In the junior varsity girls game, West Lincoln whipped BogueChitto 46-14, led by Alicia Kennedy’s 13 points and Monica Price’s12. Kala Shaw added 9 points and Anna Smith 6.

Bogue Chitto got 7 points from Candace Braxton.

In the JV boys game, the Bears prevailed 29-26, led by DanielAllen’s 11 points. Landon Case had 8 points and Stacy Fells 5.

The Bobcats were led by Irie Catchings with 13 points. LangePorter had 4 points.
