Brookhaven Academy dances past Hillcrest

The Brookhaven Academy Cougar basketball teams wrapped up theirfinal home games of the season with a pair of Saturday nightvictories over Hillcrest Christian.

The Brookhaven boys whipped Hillcrest 64-37. Hillcrest is thetwo-time defending overall state champion.

In the girls game, Brookhaven Academy dumped Hillcrest57-32.

Brookhaven Academy travels to Oak Forest at Amite, La., for theDistrict 4-AA Tournament which begins Friday and continues throughSaturday. Both BA teams are seeded No. 1.

The Cougars (26-2, 8-0) went up on Hillcrest 5-4 early in thefirst quarter and never relinquished the lead again. At the end ofthe first quarter, Brookhaven led 16-11 and increased its lead to33-23 at the half. In second half action, the Cougars outscored thevisitors 31-14 to preserve the win.

“I’m proud of the guys,” said Brookhaven boys coach Dale Watts.”We controlled the game from the beginning. The guys defended realwell.”

Guard Craig Smith powered the Cougars with 22 points and threesteals. Paul Coker followed with 17 points, four rebounds and fourblocked shots. Netting 11 points was Jimmy Latham.

High-scoring Walker Moeller of Hillcrest was held to 11points.

The Lady Cougars (26-3, 7-1) jumped on Hillcrest for a 12-8 leadin the first quarter. At the half, Brookhaven was up 31 to 19. A13-0 third-quarter run by the hosts put them up 44-19 going intothe final frame.

“I was real proud of the girls,” said Brookhaven girls coachBarry Gray.

Directing Brookhaven with 10 points apiece were Anna Gatlin andLauren Smith. Ancy Myers followed with nine points and sixrebounds. Mallory Logan pulled down seven rebounds and Gatlincollected five rebounds.

Amy McDonald led Hillcrest with 10 points.
