S. Pike girls ambush BHS; Panthers smash SP Eagles

MAGNOLIA – The South Pike girls camped at the free throw lineand ambushed Brookhaven’s Lady Panthers 65-58 Tuesday night in aDivision 6-4A showdown. The Eaglettes made 32 of 50 free throws andcapitalized on Brookhaven’s early foul trouble, avenging twoearlier setbacks.

In the varsity boys game, Brookhaven beat South Pike 65-49,powered by Lamar Hall’s 18 points and Fred Mackabee’s 14.

The Lady Panthers (23-2) were led by Ayana Tillman with16 points, 11 rebounds and 4 blocked shots. Anna Autman had 7boards. Playmaker Aneidra Stanton had 10 points, 3 assists and 3steals.

Brookhaven had beaten South Pike twice this season, athome in Sinclair Gymnasium and in the McCombTournament.

“Foul trouble in the first quarter hurt us,” saidBrookhaven coach Ronald Gill. “We had 10 fouls the first quarter.Ayana and Aneidra were both on the bench in the first quarter,” dueto foul trouble.

“We battled and never quit,” said Gill. “We went up bysix points in the fourth quarter. Then we got called for twocharges and one push-off on three possessions.”

Brookhaven had owned a 21-game victory streak enteringthe contest.

Guard Erica Holloway led South Pike with 18 points.Center Jey Cook had 16 points.

Gill said South Pike would be seeded No. 1 and the LadyPanthers No. 2 in next week’s Division 6-4A Tournament at PortGibson.

The Panthers (18-7, 4-2) went up 18-12 over the Eaglesin the first quarter. At halftime, Brookhaven commanded a 31-19lead. Going into the final frame, Coach Dan Presley’s Panthers helda 45-31 edge on the Eagles and outscored them 20-18 down thestretch.

Mackabee netted 14 points, pulled down nine rebounds andblocked two shots. Adding support with 12 points and eight assistswas guard Brandon Caston.

Leading South Pike with 10 points was KevinMcCoy.

Brookhaven hosts Natchez Friday night for its final homedate of the season.
