A Brookhaven woman who was shot in the head Saturday night wasdowngraded from the intensive care unit to a regular hospital roomat University Medical Center Tuesday night.

Betty Montgomery, 78, of 1202 Ingram St., is recovering wellfrom her gunshot wound, according to her son, Jimmy Montgomery.

“I was there yesterday for lunch and she wanted a hamburger, aphone and for me to pull the car around to the side door,” Jimmysaid with a chuckle. “She’s still in bad shape, but she’s talkingup a storm and wants to come home.”

Jimmy said the hospital tentatively plans on keeping her foranother week and then transferring her to a physical rehabilitationcenter.

“We don’t know what she can and can’t do,” he said. “She hascomplete usage of her arms and the way she wiggles around the bedher legs must work, but they just don’t know. They’re not going totake any chances.”

Montgomery was talking on the phone around 8:20 p.m. Saturdaywhen she was hit in the back of the head by a bullet that enteredher home through a bedroom window, according to Sheriff Lynn Boyte.She was taken to King’s Daughters Medical Center and thentransferred to the University of Mississippi Medical Center’sNeurosurgery Intensive Care Unit, where she stayed until lastnight.

The incident is still under investigation and deputies continueto follow leads in the shooting.

“I think Lynn Boyte’s doing an excellent job on thisinvestigation,” Jimmy said. “I think they’re giving forth a veryhonest effort and making progress.”

Boyte gave no indication whether the shooting was an accident ordone on purpose.

“We have some units going to the crime lab today with someevidence to see what we can learn,” he said. “We worked some leadsyesterday that had some merit to them.”
