McCOMB – Monday was good for the Brookhaven Panthers. They wontwo games in the McComb Spring Classic, beating Brandon 5-4 andNatchez Cathedral 13-12, led by first baseman Ben Goza’s two homeruns.

“This was a big day for us,” said Brookhaven head coach RandySpring. “We have been struggling some but we played really welltoday.

“We got two gutsy pitching performances from (Josh) Townsend and(Brooks) Hall, plus some clutching hitting. Hopefully, this can bethe thing that gets us going.”

The Panthers (5-6), minus their top three pitchers from lastyear, take Tuesday off. They are helping host part of the McCombtournament and three games will be played Wednesday on Moyer Field,starting with Lawrence County versus Southaven at 10 a.m. Southavenplays Brookhaven in a junior varsity game at 1 p.m. and the varsityteams clash at 4 p.m.

Brookhaven 13, Cathedral 12

The Panthers roared to a 13-7, fifth-inning lead andthey held on for the victory over the Green Wave from Natchez.Brooks Hall pitched the win, allowing 12 runs, 6 of them earned; on12 hits and striking out 4.

Goza’s 2 homers and a single paced Brookhaven’s offense.Darius Perkins homered, doubled and singled. Adam Ogden alsohomered as the Panthers took an 8-2 lead after 2.

Hall collected a double. Scott Smith, Corey Smith, CodyDunaway, Kern Hoff and Townsend singled.

Brookhaven 5, Brandon 4

Cody Dunaway’s 2-run single in bottom of the sixthinning pushed the Panthers to victory over Brandon. The Panthersalso got singles from Townsend, Goza, Ogden and KernHoff.

On the mound, Townsend (1-1) authored a 7-hitter. Hestruck out 4 batters as the Panthers overcame a 4-0, first-inningBrandon lead.

Brookhaven 15, Port Gibson 4

In a recent Division 6-4A game at Port Gibson, Hall’shomer led the Panthers to victory in 5 innings. Winning pitcherReggie Smith gave up 4 runs on 5 hits, striking out 5.
