Homers lift Loyd Star Hornets over McLaurin

Seth Britt drilled two solo home runs and Blake Wall ripped a2-run homer to lead the host Loyd Star Hornets to a 9-3 Division6-2A win over the McLaurin Tigers Wednesday night in a make-up gamefrom Tuesday night.
The win clinches the region title for the Hornets who improvedto 18-5 overall and 8-0 in division play.
Tonight’s originally scheduled game here with division foe St.Joseph has been moved to Saturday night. The originally scheduledgame with Clinton for Saturday has been canceled.
“It was good for the kids,” said Loyd Star first-year headbaseball coach Sidney Wheatley. “We set some goals early. It isalways good when you meet one of your goals. We still have biggerthings down the road.”
Wheatley’s Hornets will host an opening round series of theClass 2A state playoffs.
Seth Britt (5-1) got the win in relief of starter Cass Brister.Brister worked the first 3 1/3 innings with three runs allowed onfive hits, four strikeouts and five walks. Britt struck out fourbatters, walked none, allowed no hits and no runs.
Daniel Byrd was the losing hurler with four runs allowed oneight hits, four strikeouts and two walks. Reliever David Buttsworked the final two innings and allowed five runs.
Adding support to the Hornet win with a double and a single wasBrister. David Cuevas singled twice. Jared Britt and Logan Portreysingled.
Pierre Allison led McLaurin with two singles. Singling wereBubba Sandifer, Daniel Byrd and Mitch Myers.
