Dunaway signs pact with Co-Lin

Brookhaven High School senior Ginny Dunaway has signed ascholarship to play college fastpitch softball with theCopiah-Lincoln Lady Wolves for the 2002-2003 season.
Dunaway joins Lawrence County standout pitcher Ashley Davis asthe first two signees for Coach Johnny Williams and his Co-Lin LadyWolves.
Dunaway, who played second base for the Lady Panthers, islooking forward to continuing her softball career.
“I love softball,” smiled Dunaway, “I’ve been playing since ageseven.”
Dunaway plans to train to be an x-ray technician at Co-Lin.
Williams said Dunaway would be a valuable addition to his team.”Ginny is a gritty player and she’s a real hustler. She’s been downin the dirt, doing whatever she has to do to win. I like herattitude. She will always play hard.”
While at Brookhaven, Dunaway held a .313 batting average andmade 16 steals.
“It was a great year,” stated Dunaway. “Coach (Lisa) Covingtonis a great coach. I’ll miss her and Coach (John) Ogden.” Ogdenserved as an assistant coach this season.
Dunaway will represent Brookhaven on June 29 when she plays inthe Mississippi Association of Coaches All-Star Slowpitch SoftballClassic. She will be a member of the South team against NorthAll-Stars in a best-of-three series.
“We’re going to miss her,” said Covington. “She is a leader onand off the field. She leads by example. She is a hard worker.She’ll do well at Co-Lin.”
This year, Dunaway was named the Most Valuable Player, teamcaptain and was selected to the All-District team as the LadyPanthers advanced to the state playoffs. Her junior year, she wasselected to the All-District team as well as being named MostValuable Defensive Player.
Dunaway was also selected to the Daily Leader’s 2001All-Lincoln County girls slowpitch softball team.
In the classroom, Dunaway was a member of the Fellowship ofChristian Athletes, the National Honor Society and the NationalVo-Tech Honor Society. She was also voted into the Athletic Hall ofFame.
“We had a lot of memories,” said Dunaway of her Lady Pantherteammates. “We didn’t give up, we were pretty close. It was a greatyear.”
Williams said he has signed another pitcher, Katie Rouch ofMenard High School in Alexandria, La. That will give him threepitchers on the staff, led by sophomore Katie Fallin.
Another signee is Jennifer Doty of Florence. She is autility player. “She’s a good athlete who can play anywhere,” saidWilliams.
