Brakemen edge Wheels; snap 3-game losing skid

A game-ending double play by the Brookhaven Brakemen helped thempreserve a hard-earned 4-3 Wednesday night win over the Hub CityWheels of Hattiesburg in Cotton State League action. Second basemanJosh Thoms booted a ground ball to shortstop Cayce Wallace whostepped on the bag and threw to first baseman Seth Lofton for thetwin-killing.
The Brakemen (4-8) snapped a 3-game losing streak in theprocess. They got a first-inning, 2-run homer from Thoms and scoredthe winning run in the fifth when Jeffrey Waycaster scored on anerror.
Brookhaven travels to Poplarville Friday night to play theCSL-leading Rivercats in a 6:30 game. On Saturday, the Brakemanplay Pearl’s Patriots on Mississippi College’s Frierson Field,starting at noon. They host Clinton Sunday afternoon at 2:30 for atwinbill on BA’s diamond.
Jacob Leggett was the winning pitcher with relief help fromTyler Peret in the fifth and a seventh-inning save from JoshGarrett. Leggett allowed 2 runs on 5 hits, struck out 2 and walked1.
Hattiesburg, trailing 3-0 in the second, got a 2-run rally inthe fourth and a solo homer from Marcus Grisham in the sixth. TheWheels left two runners on base in the seventh as Garrett gave up 1hit, 1 walk and fanned 1 batter.
Justin Hennington was the losing pitcher. He gave up 3 runs on 6hits, striking out 1, walking none and hitting 1 batter.
Thoms homered in the first with Wallace aboard. Wallace finishedwith 2 hits. Jacob Blakeney, Anthony McLin and Garrett singled.
In the second inning, a double by Joey Sullivan drove in BenDavis with Brook’s third run.
In the fifth, Waycaster was safe on an error. After Thomswalked, Waycaster went to third on a passed ball. Hattiesburgcatcher Travis Nowell threw wide of third on play and Waycasterraced home.
Grisham, a first baseman from Delta State, went 3-for-3 to leadthe Wheels. Leftfielder Kyle Valentine had 2 hits. Dusty Hillmandoubled.
